Toward a New Generation of Photonic Humidity Sensors

This review offers new perspectives on the subject and highlights an area in need of further research. It includes an analysis of current scientific literature mainly covering the last decade and examines the trends in the development of electronic, acoustic and optical-fiber humidity sensors over this period. The major findings indicate that a new generation of sensor technology based on optical fibers is emerging. The current trends suggest that electronic humidity sensors could soon be replaced by sensors that are based on photonic structures. Recent scientific advances are expected to allow dedicated systems to avoid the relatively high price of interrogation modules that is currently a major disadvantage of fiber-based sensors.

Polarisation Dynamics of Vector Soliton Molecules in Mode Locked Fibre Laser

Two fundamental laser physics phenomena - dissipative soliton and polarisation of light are recently merged to the concept of vector dissipative soliton (VDS), viz. train of short pulses with specific state of polarisation (SOP) and shape defined by an interplay between anisotropy, gain/loss, dispersion, and nonlinearity. Emergence of VDSs is both of the fundamental scientific interest and is also a promising technique for control of dynamic SOPs important for numerous applications from nano-optics to high capacity fibre optic communications. Using specially designed and developed fast polarimeter, we present here the first experimental results on SOP evolution of vector soliton molecules with periodic polarisation switching between two and three SOPs and superposition of polarisation switching with SOP precessing. The underlying physics presents an interplay between linear and circular birefringence of a laser cavity along with light induced anisotropy caused by polarisation hole burning.

All-fiber polarization locked vector soliton laser using carbon nanotubes

We report an all-fiber mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) employing carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer composite film. By using only standard telecom grade components, without any complex polarization control elements in the laser cavity, we have demonstrated polarization locked vector solitons generation with duration of ~583 fs, average power of ~3 mW (pulse energy of 118 pJ) at the repetition rate of ~25.7 MHz.

Spectrum-, pulsewidth-, and wavelength- switchable all-fiber mode-locked Yb laser with fiber based birefringent filter

We examined methods of controlling the pulse duration, spectral width and wavelength of the output from an all-fiber Yb laser mode-locked by carbon nanotubes. It is shown that a segment of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber inserted into a standard single mode fiber based laser cavity can function as a spectral selective filter. Adjustment of the length of the PM fiber from 1 to 2 m led to a corresponding variation in the pulse duration from 2 to 3.8 ps, the spectral bandwidth of the laser output changes from 0.15 to 1.26 nm. Laser output wavelength detuning within up to 5 nm was demonstrated with a fixed length of the PM fiber by adjustment of the polarization controller.

UV-Inscription, Polarization-Dependant Loss Characteristics and Applications of 45

We have UV-inscribed and theoretically and experimentally analyzed fiber gratings with the structure tilted at 45° and implemented this type of devices as an in-fiber polarizer. A systematic investigation has been carried out on the characterization of 45° tilted fiber gratings (45° TFGs) in terms of the polarization-dependant loss (PDL) and thermal response. The detailed theoretical modeling has revealed a linear correlation between the grating length and the PDL, which has been proved by the experimental results. For the first time, we have examined the UV beam diffraction from a tilted phase mask and designed the UV-inscription system to suit the 45° TFG fabrication. Experimentally, a 24 mm long 45° TFG UV-inscribed in standard telecom single-mode fiber exhibited around 25 dB PDL at 1530 nm and an over ~ 300 nm bandwidth of PDL spectrum. By the concatenation method, a 44 mm long grating showed a PDL as high as 40 dB that is close to the high polarization extinction ratio of commercial products. Moreover, we have revealed that the PDL of 45° TFGs has low thermal influence, which is desirable for real application devices. Finally, we experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber twist sensor system based on a 45° and an 81° TFG.

A self-starting all-fiber passively mode-locked Tm(3+)-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear loop mirror (NOLM) is demonstrated. Stable soliton pulses centered at 2017.33 nm with 1.56 nm FWHM were produced at a repetition rate of 1.514 MHz with pulse duration of 2.8 ps and pulse energy of 83.8 pJ. As increased pump power, the oscillator can also operate at noise-like (NL) regime. Stable NL pulses with coherence spike width of 341 fs and pulse energy of up to 249.32 nJ was achieved at a center wavelength of 2017.24 nm with 21.33 nm FWHM. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 2 µm region NOLM-based mode-locked fiber laser operating at two regimes with the highest single pulse energy for NL pulses.

Tilted Fiber Gratings

We demonstrate an all-fiber passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) using a gold-nanosphere (GNS) based saturable absorber (SA) with evanescent field interaction. Using the interaction of evanescent field for fabricating SAs, long nonlinear interaction length of evanescent wave and GNSs can be achieved. The GNSs are synthesized from mixing solution of chloroauricacid (HAuCl4) and sodium citrate by the heating effects of the microfibers evanescent field radiation. The proposed passively Q-switched EDFL could give output pulses at 1562 nm with pulse width of 1.78 μs, a repetition rate of 58.1 kHz, a pulse energy of 133 nJ and a output power of 7.7 mW when pumped by a 980 nm laser diode of 237 mW.

Passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser using evanescent field interaction with gold-nanosphere based saturable absorber.

In this letter, we report on the inscription of a fourth-order fiber Bragg grating made line-by-line in the optical fiber using a femtosecond laser. Strong Bragg resonance (~17 dB) and low insertion loss (~0.5 dB) were obtained with only 2000 periods. Measured refractive index change of these inscribed lines reaches up to 7 × 10-3. The grating was fully characterized and the low insertion loss together with low polarization-dependent loss were realized compared to gratings made by the point-by-point method. The high temperature annealing experiment shows the grating can survive up to at least 800°C.

We report experimental observation of new tightly and loosely bound state vector solitons with locked and precessing states of polarization in a carbon nanotube mode locked fiber laser in the anomalous dispersion regime.
