Current Status of Ethnic Minority Counselor Educators in the United States

Recruitment and retention of ethnic minorityfaculty is a challenge facing professionals inhigher education across the country. Issuesrelated to finding and keeping ethnic minoritycounselor educators continue to stimulateresearch interest in barriers to education andcareer development as well as in improvingmulticultural competencies of all counselors.This article reports data from a nationalsurvey of research, teaching, and serviceactivities of ethnic minority counseloreducators. Results indicated that the majorityof faculty of color were untenured and at theassistant professor level. Findings alsorevealed that a small number of ethnic minorityfaculty were asked to collaborate withcolleagues on referred publications.Implications for the counseling profession arealso presented.

Using the Family Autobiography in School Counselor Preparation: An Introduction to a Systemic Perspective

School counseling professionals are recognizing the need to address family issues as an intervention strategy with children. Counselor educators can assist school counselor trainees in understanding the family systems’perspective by using the family autobiography as a course requirement. This article presents a description of the family autobiography as it was used in a family theories course specifically designed for school counselor trainees. School counseling trainees’ (N = 32) evaluation of the family autobiography assignment are presented and discussed.

This response discusses the importance of “privilege talk” and relates the concept of privilege to group counseling research. The impact of “colorblindness” on the dynamics of groups is discussed. The importance of understanding social privilege and its influence on counseling groups is emphasized.
