Research trends in self‐regulated learning research in online learning environments: A review of studies published in selected journals from 2003 to 2012

Chia-Wen Tsai; Pei-Di Shen; Ya-Ting Fan

Background and objectives As the Internet and developing technology creates and transforms teaching and learning processes, it brings new opportunities to the educational system (Esteves, Fonseca, Morgado & Martins, 2011). Synchronous and asynchronous communication tools such as online chats and forums enable students to communicate and complete their tasks (Schworm & Gruber, 2012). However, teachers are challenged to concentrate students’ attention in an online or blended course in an environment that is full of shopping websites, online games, and social networking websites (eg, Facebook) (Tsai, 2011a). That is, online learning environments may not meet the original purpose of providing students with a tool to support their learning process during the semester (Stricker, Weibel & Wissmath, 2011). In this regard, online learning requires a radical redesigning and reworking of pedagogy in order to accommodate these learners (Burdick & Willis, 2011). It is suggested that students should have self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies when they study in an online learning environment (Tsai, 2011b).

The Application of Augmented Reality in Online Education: A Review of Studies Published in Selected Journals from 2003 to 2012

Chia-Wen Tsai; Pei-Di Shen; Ya-Ting Fan

In this paper, the authors reviewed the empirical augmented reality (AR) and online education studies, and those focused on designing or development of AR to help students learn, published in SSCI, SCI-EXPANDED, and A&HCI journals from 2003 to 2012. The authors in this study found that the number of AR and online education studies has significantly increased since 2009. Based on this review, it is found that contributors from Spain, Romania, Taiwan, and Germany had the most publications on AR and online education during 2003 to 2012. Moreover, the analysis of these selected papers reveals that most empirical AR and online education studies were conducted at universities, as well as in computer science courses. Furthermore, the quantitative research method was used more in the reviewed papers. The findings and analysis from this review may provide potential directions and insights for future AR and online education research.

Factors Influencing Consumer Adoption for Network Fellowship Auction in Taiwan

Yi-Fen Chen; Chia-Wen Tsai

The emerging online economy in recent years has facilitated the rapid growth of e-commerce, such as Internet bank, e-wallet, and electronic bidding. Network fellowship auction is a collective effort by people who network and pool their money together by Internet in order to invest in and support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. Network fellowship auction has replaced conventional fellowship auction by offering a new safer and faster financial instrument. This research investigated the determinants of network fellowship auction user acceptance, including consumer perceived risk, perceived value, computer self-efficacy, and product involvement. An online survey was used with a sample of 446 respondents. Structural equation models (SEM) were used to examine hypotheses in the theoretical framework. The results showed that consumer perceived risk substantially negatively influenced perceived ease of use and intention; consumer perceived value positively influenced perceived usefulness; consumer computer self-efficacy positively influenced perceived ease of use. Additionally, consumer perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and product involvement positively influenced consumer intention.

Exploring the Effects of Web-Mediated Game-Based Learning and Self-Regulated Learning on Students’ Learning

Chia-Wen Tsai; Pi-Fang Hsu; Hsueh-Ju Tseng

This research focuses on exploring the effects of game-based learning (GBL) and self-regulated learning (SRL) on promoting students’ learning and the interactions between teachers, students and peers. The experiment designed for this study was conducted in the course of “Media Marketing Management†. The effects of GBL, SRL, and their combination on the students’ learning performances are analyzed with the quantitative and qualitative data of students’ learning. Based on the results of this study, it is found that students who receive the combined teaching methods of web-mediated GBL and SRL have better learning performance than those receive traditional GBL in classroom, although insignificantly. Not only is the outcome of SRL and interactive learning improved, the efficiency of teaching is enhanced. The implications of this study are also discussed.
