Thirty new asymmetric diphenyl‐diacetylene (PTTP) liquid‐crystal homologs are synthesized and their physical properties characterized. In addition to the observed high birefringence and relatively low viscosity, several dialkyl PTTP homologs also possess a low melting point, wide nematic range, and low heat of fusion enthalpy. These properties are highly desirable for forming eutectic mixtures with entirely PTTP components. A binary eutectic showing a nematic range from 10 to 98 °C is studied. These new liquid‐crystal compounds and mixtures should be particularly useful for infrared applications.

We demonstrate an integration of polymer light-emitting diode (LED) and polymer transistor in which no patterning of the organic layers is needed. Intrinsic high-mobility semiconducting conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) is used as the hole-transport layer for polymer LED. The light emission efficiency is only slightly lower than the LED with conventional heavily doped hole-transport layer. Such LED is easily integrated with a P3HT transistor without patterning.

A metal-oxide field-effect transistor (MOSFET) based on an electroluminescent conjugated polymer is fabricated on a glass substrate. It is found that the mobility horizontal to the substrate is two to three orders of magnitude larger than the mobility vertical to the substrate. The high horizontal mobility is attributed to the in-plane chain alignment in amorphous spin-coated films. We demonstrate an active pixel in which the light-emitting diode and the driving MOSFET share the same active polymer.

A highly efficient blue polymer light-emitting diode based exclusively on commercial poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) and poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(4,4′-(N-(4-s-butylphenyl)) diphenylamine)] is demonstrated. High electroluminescent efficiency is achieved by enhancing electron currents and making devices in multilayered structures. CsF∕Al is used as the efficient electron injection cathode, and the fabrication process is in the glove box to enhance electron mobility by reducing oxygen adsorption. The multilayer structure is prepared by the liquid buffer layer technique. The maximum efficiency is 2.5 cd∕A at deep blue with the corresponding external quantum efficiency of 2%.
