The change of gas composition in bubble

Abstract The purpose of the present work is to clarify the dependence of the change of gas composition in artificial bubble with heat treatment on melting conditions of the glass. The artificial bubbles containing one component gas selected from O2, N2, CO2, and air were produced in three kinds of soda-lime glass melted in different conditions. The bubbles were treated at 1000°C for 20 min. The manner of absorption of gas by the glass in various cases was explained by the gas concentration in the glass and the redox conditions of the glass. In most cases, gas unidentified by gas chromatograph analysis occupied a part of the volume of the bubble when the original gas in bubble was absorbed by the glass. It was suggested that the unidentified gas was possibly sulfur dioxide for O2 bubble in the reducing glass and water vapor for the other bubbles.
