A novel wide-view transflective display has been developed. This kind of display has a high contrast wide-viewing angle with no grey level inversion by using the multidomain vertical alignment technology, and adequate reflectance with simple structure by using a novel advanced transflective technology.

Using a 6-view 3D mobile display, a modified LC pixel mode that increases transmittance and brightness uniformity for each viewing zone plus pixel electrode physical re-configuration capable of increasing Aperture Ratio were investigated. The pixel mode utilized was the single-domain VA. In the modified case of the single domain VA mode with the reconfiguration, it was observed that by optimizing each pixel, the transmittance of the single-domain VA could be improved by more than 24% at relatively wide, mobile display, viewing angles from ∼9 ° to ∼30 ° compared with conventional multi-domain VA.

The transmissive and reflective gamma curve incongruence is a serious issue for single gap TRLCD. ACC (Advanced Capacitor Coupling) technology has been developed to make the reflective gamma curve similar to the transmissive gamma curve. The threshold voltage and slop of reflective gamma curve are well controlled. The cross-talk issue due to electrical coupling of data line is also solved by a new electrical shielding structure. An improved array process is used to reduce manufacturing cost and increase array throughput. with ACC Tech., the TRLCD can have both simple structure and good transflective optical performances.
