A 32-year-old is in labour for the last 8 h. She had a previous uneventful vaginal birth at term. She has just broken her waters and there is meconium staining of the liquor amnii. The CTG shows late decelerations. Per vaginam examination shows that the cervix is 6 cm dilated with presenting part at −3 station. 1-C(CVS)—at 11 weeks gestation with a previous history of genetic syndrome, in this case beta-thalassemia, autosomal recessive with a 25 % chance of recurrence, a CVS would be ideal. CVS can be done at 11 weeks to obtain fetal DNA—allows for earlier diagnosis and, if results are unfavourable, gives the option of a first-trimester TOP.
