Sex pheromone produced by female sweet potato leaf folder moth

extends on the wall of the thorax. The animals were sacrificed between 25 and 157 days after transplantation. For histological examinations the material was fixed in Bouins solution, and slices of 5 gm were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Secretion of hGH of the transplanted human fetal pituitaries was assayed in plasma of the mice by a double antibody radioimmunoassay (CEA.IRE-SORIN-kit, IDW, W. Germany). The assay had a sensitivity of 0.2 ng/ml hGH. In 8 of 12 recipient mice, growth of the transplants could be seen. The transplants contained only adenohypophyseal tissue. We were never able to demonstrate neurohypophyseal cells. Undifferentiated cells with pale nucleus and pale cytoplasm, numerous acidophilic cells with an excentric nucleus, and basophilic cells like chromophobe cells with a fine vacuolated cytoplasm could be seen. Levels of hGH in the plasma of 2 Control animals and 6 recipients were examined. Four of the latter showed growth macroscopically and microscopically. Their hGH levels varied between 0.8 and 20.5 ng/ml (mean value 5.4 ng/ml). No hGH could be detected in the plasma of the controls and in 2 recipients without growth of the transplants. We were able to show the presence of hGH by means of a specific radioimmunoassay. So the biological activity of transplanted pituitary tissue in these heterologous hosts could be proved. It is conduced that this transplantation model allows investigations of human fetal adenohypophysis under in vivo conditions without hypothalamic regulation. Compared to the techniques of in vitro cultures [3] the transplantation model described seems to be superior and more physiological. At the present t ime further investigations on human fetal pituitaries transplanted in nu/nu mice are done using function tests and immunohistochemical methods [41. Received June 15, 1976

Similarity of mass spectra of double-bond positional isomers of tetradecen-1-ols and their acetates was evaluated, based on the intensity ratios of pairs of predominant ions, transformed by a novel equation to define a similarity index.

Scanning electron microscopic observations of the mouthparts and feeding marks of Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

走査電子顕微鏡により,ミナミキイロアザミウマ雌成虫の口器構造ならびに本種の摂食により生じたナス,キュウリ葉上の被害部分を観察した。本種の口器は,複眼の間から下に広がる後頭楯の下方に位置する口錐である。左右がやや不対称の逆三角形で,前頭楯,上脣,小腮葉および下脣が癒合して形成されている。口錐の先端は膜状の側舌で覆われ,その上には感覚毛と考えられる約10対の小突起が配列している。摂食時には側舌は口錐側方に後退し,露出した口錐先端から1本の大腮針と2本の小腮針を突出させる。大腮針は肉厚で大きく,直径約1.7μmであった。植物の表皮細胞に穴を穿つ役割をもつと考えられる。一方,小腮針は2本が合わさって1本の吸汁管を形成する。形成された吸汁管の外径は約1.7μm,内径は1μm前後である。膜状の側舌が後退して露出した口錐先端には,突出した大腮針および小腮針の基部を大きく囲んで上脣皿(仮称,labral pad)と考えられる盃状の構造物が認められた。被害を受けて陥没したキュウリ葉やナス葉の表皮細胞には,楕円形の吸汁孔の痕(直径約2μm)が認められたが,それ以外の傷痕,例えば咀嚼あるいは嘗食の痕跡はまったく認められなかった。口器の構造および摂食の痕跡からみて,本種は真の吸汁性昆虫であると結論される。
