Lucy + Jorge Orta

David Buckland; Chris Wainwright

In the work of Lucy + Jorge Orta, Vitrines and Windows on the World are focal points drawing our attention to a specific subject or issue. We usually find a photographic reference and a series of metaphorical objects inside or suspended from the structures. In these two works, the artists’ dphotographs from their expedition to the Peruvian Amazon are enlarged or fragmented; in the case of the antique Spanish window frame, whose doors and shutters open in an Alice in Wonderland voyage, revealing the different Amazon landscapes. The Vitrine makes reference to the artists’ longstanding research focus on the subject of water, containing bottles from their water purification projects in Rotterdam and Venice, as well as the iconic pierced gourds and containers.

David Buckland; Chris Wainwright

During the 2009 Cape Farewell trip to the Peruvian Andes and Amazon, Marije tracked the crew’s physical reaction to the various climate extremes they were put through: altitude, humidity, cold, heat, diet, exertion and wildlife. The results are logged on this chart showing the intensity of the crew’s experiences.
