WIRELESS VEHICLE TO VEHICLE WARNING SYSTEM

Christian Passmann; Christian Brenzel; Reinhard Meschenmoser

To satisfy the increasing demand for automotive safety a warning system (WARN) to support drivers has been developed. The basic idea is to transmit safety-related information from one vehicle to surrounding vehicles by direct wireless communication. To ensure user-acceptance of the system different strategies have been developed in order to provide only relevant information to a specific driver. The strategies rely on a comparison of the received alert messages with the current driving situation. Simulations show a significant safety-improvement due to the system if at least 10 percent of all vehicles are equipped with the system. (A) For the covering abstract see ITRD E106371.

Investigation of a calibration concept for optimum performance of adaptive antenna systems

Christian Passmann; F. Hickel; T. Wixforth

A calibration concept for an adaptive antenna system has been developed. It consists of two steps: (1) an off-line calibration of passive components after manufacture; and (2) an on-line calibration of active components during operation. Off-line calibration measurements have been performed and analyzed using an array antenna for the 1.71-1.785 GHz frequency range, which is equipped with calibration ports for precise phase and amplitude calibration of the element coefficients. The influence of calibration-inaccuracies, mutual coupling effects, and nonideal beam-patterns are critically discussed.

Integrated 5.8 GHz Phased Array Antenna for Electronic Toll Collection

G. Villino; Christian Passmann; D. Mansen; C. Brenzel; T. Wixforth

An integrated 3/spl times/8 element phased array receiving antenna combined with a 4/spl times/8 element transmit antenna for 5.8 GHz DSRC D_edicated S_hort R_ange C_ommunication has been built. The number of analog phaseshifters and antenna elements has been optimized to meet the specific requirements of the application and of the DSRC-standard. A sophisticated concept for the integration of analog beamformer, RF-chain, and array antenna has been developed to enable a design of the complete antenna system on a thin multilayer structure. The size of the whole antenna is 280 mm/spl times/400 mm/spl times/20 mm.

A polarization flexible phased array antenna for a mobile communication SDMA field trial

Christian Passmann; G. Villino; T. Wixforth

An 8/spl times/8 element array antenna for 1.71-1.785 GHz frequency range suited for an adaptive antenna system has been built. The elements are broadband microstrip patches, which are optimized for large angular coverage. The antenna can be digitally switched between 16 different polarizations to enhance polarization-diversity-gain. Calibration ports allow precise phase and amplitude adjustment of element coefficients.

Connected car – driver assistance sensors get connected

Stephan Stass; Hans-Jörg Mathony; Cristian Gavanescu; Christian Passmann; Dieter Hötzer

In future we will see more and more connected cars, which means that cars have a direct mobile communication or WLAN link to the cloud, to traffic infrastructure or even between each other, based on secure connections. First legislation initiatives, e.g. in China, already require continuous supervision of drivetrain systems based on a cloud network. New business models and extended chains of economic value will change and create new markets.

Wireless Inter-Vehicle Communication for Hazard Warning

Christian Brenzel; Christian Passmann; Reinhard Meschenmoser

Abstract Increasing automotive safety may be achieved by notifying drivers about incidents ahead. To enable drivers for proper reaction a warning system has been developed. Safety-related information is transmitted from one vehicle to surrounding vehicles by direct wireless data communication. The system evaluates some signals provided by the vehicle to detect hazardous conditions. Different strategies have been developed to decrease drivers interaction and to provide only relevant information to a specific driver. Simulations show a significant safety improvement due to the system if at least 10 to 15 percent of all vehicles are equipped with the systems.
