[Purpose] To investigate the impact of gender on mobilization and mechanical ventilation in hospitalized patients in an intensive care unit. [Subjects and Methods] A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted of the medical records of 105 patients admitted to a general intensive care unit. The length of mechanical ventilation, length of intensive care unit stay, weaning, time to sitting out of bed, time to performing active exercises, and withdrawal of sedation exercises were evaluated in addition to the characteristics of individuals, reasons for admission and risk scores. [Results] Women had significantly lower values APACHE II scores, duration of mechanical ventilation, time to withdrawal of sedation and time to onset of active exercises. [Conclusion] Women have a better functional response when admitted to the intensive care unit, spending less time ventilated and performing active exercises earlier.

Introduction: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) considers multiples aspects of functionality. It is believed that this tool can help to classify the functionality of older adults with low back pain (LBP) . Objectives: To describe the functionality of active older adults with LBP according to the ICF. Methods: A transversal study was conducted using the brief ICF core set for low back pain, to establish functional profiles of 40 older adults. The ICF categories were considered valid when ≥20% of participants showed some disability. Results: Thirty-two of the 35 categories of the brief ICF core set could be considered representative of the sample. Conclusion: The brief ICF core set for LBP results demonstrated that this classification system is representative for describing the functional profile of the sample.

The objective of this study was to conduct a survey of the practices related to the mobilization of patients admitted to a general ICU, comparing them by type of intervention (clinical or surgical). This is a retrospective study of medical records of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Ministro Costa Cavalcanti in the city of Foz do Iguacu, state of Parana, Brazil, of which the following information were obtained: time to sit out of the hospital bed for the first time, to perform active exercises, to wean mechanical ventilation, of ICU hospitalization; diagnosis; sex; and age. We included 105 patients in the research, being 44 (41.9%) surgical, and 61 (58.1%) males, with an average age of 61.1±18.5 for clinical patients and 60.4±14.9 for surgical patients. We observed statistical difference concerning time to sit out of the bed (3±4 days for clinical patients and 3.1±4.5 for surgical patients) (p=0.02). We did not observe any differences regarding active exercises when comparing clinical and surgical patients.

Introduction: There is evidence for various physical therapy interventions used for the knee osteoarthritis treatment, and currently in medicine has been used hyaluronic acid. Aims: The objective of this review was to identify studies that compared the use of hyaluronic acid with the physical therapy interventions for treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Methods: A systematic review was carried out by consulting the databases PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, PEDro, LILACS and ACP Journal Club, using the keywords “hyaluronic acid”, “osteoarthritis” and “physical therapy”. Clinical trials, controlled and/or randomized clinical trials published in English, Spanish and Portuguese that compared the use of hyaluronic acid with some physical therapy intervention for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis were included. The study quality was evaluated using the Jadad and PEDro scale. Results: Were identified 81 studies, of these, 7 were included in this review. Conclusions: Although few studies have compared the efficacy of physical therapy treatment with the application of hyaluronic acid was observed that both treatments showed positive results in the knee osteoarthritis management.

Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of patients with heart failure and correlate it with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). Method: This is a crosssectional study with a sample of 19 patients, mean age of 66.28 ± 10.93 years, whose quality of life was assessed by the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ); for each question a domain of ICF was given whose results were then correlated. Results: The average MLHFQ questionnaire score was 61.21 ± 17.56. There was a positive correlation between the quality of life and left ventricular ejection fraction (r = 0.75; p = 0.0006), which was not seen when comparing the quality of life with functional class. There was a high correlation between patient outcomes and the assessment of the physiotherapist using the ICF. Conclusions: The MLFHQ questionnaire includes the requirements of the ICF, showing a high correlation between its responses and those from the ICF, and is considered global, which allows these instruments to be used in evaluating patients with congestive heart failure (CHF)
