Length of the human vocal folds: proposal of mathematical equations as a function of gender and body height.

To obtain a mathematical equation that could estimate the length of the intermembranous part of the vocal fold as a function of body height and gender, we removed the larynges from 39 cadavers (22 men and 17 women) after recording the subjects height, age, and cause of death. The dimensions of the vocal folds were determined with a digital pachymeter. The following equations were obtained: y = 0.18x − 15.8 for men and y = 0.24x − 28.1 for women, where y is the length of the intermembranous part of the vocal folds in millimeters and x is the height of the individual in centimeters. We conclude that it is possible to estimate the normal expected length of the intermembranous portion of the male and female vocal folds on the basis of body height.

Assessment of collagen deposits after implant of fascia lata and fat in the vocal folds of rabbits: histomorphometric study

UNLABELLED Several materials have been injected or introduced in the vocal folds in attempt of solving the glottic insufficiency. However, few studies have evaluated the cicatricial process due to the implantation of these materials. AIM The objective of this research was to evaluate the concentration of collagen after microsurgery graft of muscular fascia and fat in the vocal folds of rabbit. STUDY DESIGN experimental. MATERIAL AND METHOD Nineteen rabbits were submitted to the graft insert in the right vocal fold, being nine of fascia and ten of fat. The left vocal fold was submitted to the same process, except for the insertion of fat or fascial graft. The rabbits were sacrificed after 90 and 180 days. The collagen was analyzed through the method of the Picrosirius-polarization using the Image Pro Plus software. RESULTS There was prevalence of the collagen in all grafted groups when compared with the group control. The concentration of the collagen found in the rabbits submitted to fat graft was significantly larger when compared to the concentration of the rabbits submitted to graft of muscular fascia, either with 90 as with 180 days. CONCLUSION The fat and muscular fascia implantation in the vocal folds of rabbit promoted production of collagen, being more intense with fat.

The authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using fat and fascia in the management of glottic insufficiency, regarding historical aspects, inflammatory process and surgical techniques.

Anatomia endoscópica do seio esfenoidal

Introduction: The internal anatomy of the sphenoid sinus plays a role of great importance due to its peculiar placement in the center of the head, surrounded by important adjacent structures, which make themselves transparent in its internal walls. Study design: Anatomic. Material and method: In this study, 52 sphenoid sinus were endoscopically dissected, and the elevations and depressions presented on its internal walls, produced by the internal carotid artery and the optic, maxillary and vidian nerves, were analyzed. Results: In 88,5% of the cases, the internal carotid artery were projected into the sinus, while the optic nerve were in 55,8%. The vidian and maxillary nerves were salient in 25% and 30% respectively. Conclusion: These data point us to the rich end delicate internal anatomy of the sphenoid sinus, which is progressively closer and more vulnerable to surgical maneuvers, due to the advance of surgical skills, techniques and knowledge. Thus, the study and comprehension of the sphenoid sinus internal anatomy became essential, concerning the endoscopic sinus surgery and its huge field of technical resources.

Laryngeal malformation in Richieri‐Costa Pereira syndrome: New findings

Laryngeal structural anomalies were described in 13 cases of Richieri‐Costa Pereira syndrome, and four previously reported cases were reviewed. The 17 individuals examined had the typical laryngeal anomalies and vocal disorders previously described. The new findings are the laryngeal microweb observed in three cases and arytenoid anteriorization movement observed in 14 cases.

Effects of laryngeal manual therapy (LMT) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in vocal folds diadochokinesis of dysphonic women: a randomized clinical trial

Purpose To verify and compare the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and laryngeal manual therapy (LMT) on laryngeal diadochokinesis (DDK) of dysphonic women. Methods Twenty women with bilateral vocal nodules participated and were equally divided into: LMT Group - LMT application; TENS Group - TENS application; both groups received 12 sessions of treatment, twice a week, with a duration of 20 minutes each, applied by the same therapist. The women were evaluated as to laryngeal DDK at three moments: diagnostic, pre-treatment, and post-treatment, which produced three groups of measurements. The DDK recording was performed with intersected repetition of vowels /a/ and / i/. The analysis of vowels was performed by the program Motor Speech Profile Advanced (MSP)-KayPentax. The DDK parameters of the three evaluations were compared by means of the paired t-test (p≤0.05). Results The measurements of laryngeal DDK parameters were similar in the phase without treatment, indicating no individual variability over time. There was no change with respect to the speed of DDK after intervention, but after LMT, DDK of the vowel /i/ was more stable in terms of the duration of the emissions and intensity of emissions repeated. These results show improved coordination of vocal folds movement during phonation. There were no changes in the DDK parameters following TENS.
