Longitudinal vibration mode of piezoelectric thick-film cantilever-based sensors in liquid media

Christophe Castille; Isabelle Dufour; Claude Lucat

We report on the fabrication of a self-actuated resonant-microsensor, based on a thick-film piezoelectric cantilever, dedicated to either (bio)chemical detection in gaseous or liquid media or fluid characterization. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that longitudinal modes can be used in highly viscous environments. Lower levels of fluid-solid interaction in comparison with classical flexural modes are expected from the results of our analytical model of a cantilever oscillating in a fluid. For example, in various fluid ranging from air to a Newtonian fluid of 300 cP viscosity, measured quality factors for the first longitudinal mode range from 300 to 20.

Microsystems elements based on free-standing thick-films made with a new sacrificial layer process

Claude Lucat; Patrick Ginet; Christophe Castille; Hélène Debéda; Francis Menil

A new process derived from screen-printing technology and based on thick sacrificial layers has been developed in our laboratory for the fabrication of films partially released from the substrate. The sacrificial layer acts as a stable mechanical support during the firing of the active layer and is totally removed after the final thermal treatment of the sample. Fabrication of a copper electrothermal actuator was undertaken to demonstrate the efficiency of this simple, collective and low cost process. Passive components based on this new process include the fabrication of heating resistors, strain gauges and microchannels. Moreover, the process can also be used to facilitate the implementation of piezoelectric devices.

Study of self-actuated screen-printed PZT-cantilevers

Usually, resonating cantilevers come from silicon technology and are generally activated with pure bending mode. In this work, we suggest to combine high sensitive cantilever structure with full self-actuated piezoelectric thick-film for high electrical-mechanical coupling. This cantilever is realized through the screen-printing deposition associated with a sacrificial layer. The beam part of the cantilever is composed of a PZT layer between two gold electrodes. Optimum performances of ferroelectric ceramics strongly rely on their composition and microstructure which imply generally the use of mechanical pressure and very high sintering temperature. These conditions are not compatible with the screen-printing process. As already shown with ceramics, addition of eutectic composition Li2CO3-CuO-Bi2O3 or borosilicate glass-frit to PZT powder and application of isostatic pressure, the sintering temperature of cantilevers may be decreased. Screen-printed piezoelectric samples are thus fired at 850°C, 900°C and...
