Understanding Environmental Issues with Temporal Lenses: Issues of Temporality and Individual Differences

Taciano L. Milfont; Christophe Demarque

It has now been recognised that environmental issues entail both a social conflict (private vs. public interests) and a temporal conflict (short- vs. long-term interests). Supporting this view, several studies have shown that greater future time perspective is associated with higher pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours. A recent meta-analytical summary of 19 independent samples (comprising more than 6,000 participants from seven countries) published by our research group has shown a medium effect size on the influence between future time perspective and environmental engagement. This chapter will first provide a theoretical summary of the links between time perspective (and in particular future time perspective) and environmental issues. This chapter will then review studies examining associations between future time perspective and environmental engagement at the individual and societal level. Implications and future directions for research in the area will also be discussed.

Approval of hierarchy and inequality in society indexed by social dominance orientation (SDO) extends to support for human dominance over the natural world. We tested this negative association between SDO and environmentalism and the validity of the new Short Social Dominance Orientation Scale in two cross-cultural samples of students (N = 4,163, k = 25) and the general population (N = 1,237, k = 10). As expected, the higher people were on SDO, the less likely they were to engage in environmental citizenship actions, pro-environmental behaviors and to donate to an environmental organization. Multilevel moderation results showed that the SDO–environmentalism relation was stronger in societies with marked societal inequality, lack of societal development, and environmental standards. The results highlight the interplay between individual psychological orientations and social context, as well as the view of nature subscribed to by those high in SDO.

Special issue of Psyecology: social norms and environmental behaviour / Número especial de Psyecology: normas sociales y comportamiento ambiental

Christophe Demarque; Maria-Luisa Lima

Abstract In recent years there have been growing expectations from policymakers towards social sciences in order to reach sustainability goals. Research on social norms is often used to promote changes in pro-environmental behaviour. However, the underlying social psychological mechanisms that explain those changes are not yet well described. This special issue puts together four papers that, from different perspectives, contribute to innovation in this field, proposing theoretically relevant mediators and contextual moderators.

Commitment and pro-environmental behaviors: Favoring positive human-environment interactions to improve quality of life

Christophe Demarque; Fabien Girandola

Weiss and Girandola (Qualite de l’environnement et comportements ecocitoyens. In Weiss K, Girandola F (eds) Psychologie et developpement durable. Editions InPress, Paris, pp 277–282, 2010b) suggested developing a positive psychology of sustainable development, dealing with social and dispositional factors that enable satisfaction, quality of life and, even more, individual well-being. In line with this idea, we focus in this chapter on action research developing positive interactions between humans and the environment. More precisely, we review commitment-making strategies and the effects of binding communication on the adoption of pro-environmental behaviors such as waste sorting, recycling, non-activist behaviors in the public sphere and energy saving, likely to be positively perceived by the individual and contributing to quality of life.
