Clotrimazole vs Haloprogin in the Treatment of Tinea Cruris

Christopher M. Papa

To the Editor.— The choice of clotrimazole vs haloprogin, which VanDersarl and Sheppard (Archives113:1233-1235,1977) used to treat tinea cruris at Keesler Air Force Base, is a matter of amusement and concern to me. A similar study was done at the same government facility several years ago ( JAMA 230:72-75, 1974) and showed miconazole nitrate cream (Mica Tin) to be 100% effective in tinea cruris, with 95% of the patients being truly cured (no relapse or recurrence). One wonders why the US Air Force has not been using this effective agent on the base and why Maj VanDersarl did not compare clotrimazole and miconazole.
