The Classroom Is the Newsroom: CNA: A Wire Service Journalism Training Model to Bridge the Theory Versus Practice Dichotomy:

Christopher Tulloch; Lluís Mas Manchón

Although recent journalism education literature has promoted constant innovation, creative curriculum design, and the adaptation of teaching methodologies to the requirements of a fiercely competitive media marketplace, the permanent face-off between the academy and the profession has often led to theoretical models distanced from real newsroom dynamics prompting the need for transversal projects that integrate both valid theoretical axioms and core competences. The Catalan News Agency (CNA) experiment, which obliges students to provide professional-level English-language content for an official news agency, addresses this dichotomy and goes beyond classic simulation models as trainees must comply with academic goals and adjust to agency dynamics.

The Influence of the International Press and Foreign Correspondents in Transitional Democracies: The role of the Anglo-American journalists during post-Francoist Spain (1975–1978)

Christopher Tulloch; Marcel Mauri; Jaume Guillamet

The intersection between journalism and political transitions in contemporary history is a research field which has begun to flourish in recent years. From the “Carnation Revolution” in Portugal in 1974 through to post-apartheid South Africa in the early 1990s and up to the so-called “social media revolutions” of the Arab Spring of 2011, both historical and comparative political studies have considered the international press to play an integral role in these processes of democratic change. In this context of regime change, the Spanish transition to democracy (1975–1978) is often portrayed as the most exemplary case study. This article analyses the role played by the foreign correspondents of the British and American broadsheets and wire services sent to cover events in Spain as well as the contribution made by the Anglo-American press through its editorial stance on key issues and its commitment to the story both in terms of journalistic output and human resources. The article suggests that the role of the international press not only offers a useful connecting route to those charged with making foreign policy decisions and monitoring the state of public opinion in their respective capitals—in this case London and Washington—but can also make an indirect contribution to the sway of political events at a domestic level.

Franquismo, monarquía y democracia. La posición política de los principales diarios (ABC, La Vanguardia Española, Informaciones y YA) durante la transición española a la democracia (1975-1977)

Ruth Rodríguez-Martínez; Christopher Tulloch; Jaume Guillamet i Lloveras

The political role of the Spanish press after the death of Franco (1975) varies according to the company profile and political tradition of the different newspapers. In this paper we analyze the role played by the most important newspapers in terms of readership, influence and age in the process of the transition to democracy. The newspapers studied are La Vanguardia —independent, founded in Barcelona in 1881, ABC —monarchic, founded in Madrid in 1905—, YA —catholic, founded in Madrid in 1935 and Informaciones —independent, founded in Madrid in 1922. The conclusions of the paper allow us to establish the political behaviour of the main Spanish newspapers with its unconditional support of the Crown, different attitudes in relation to the first two post-Franco governments and defined positions towards emerging political parties and the Constitution.

Take Five: How Sports Illustrated and L’Équipe redefine the long-form sports journalism genre

Christopher Tulloch; Xavier Ramon

The consolidation of the counter genre that is long-form sports journalism (LFSJ) is of growing interest to the sports media researcher. In order to trace its expansion across the sports journalism landscape, this article offers a comparative transatlantic case study featuring the entire collection of long-form stories developed by two prestigious publications: the American magazine Sports Illustrated (SI Longform) and the French sports daily L’Équipe (L’Équipe Explore). The study considers the slow journalism heritage of LFSJ and its challenge to established Web interface theology while exploring key issues such as the sports agenda, sourcing and the use of immersive multimedia formats, aimed at improving the sporting culture of its users. The article concludes by considering the pivotal role of LFSJ in the brand-building strategies of the media outlets themselves.
