An asymmetrical photochromic diarylethene1-(2-Methyl-3-benzothiophene)-2-[2-methyl-5-(3-cyanophenyl)-3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1o) was synthesized and its phtochromic, fluorescent properties in both solution and PMMA films were investigated in detail. This compound exhibited remarkable photochromism, upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, the colorless solution of 1o turned to violet with a new visible absorption band centered at 535 nm (ε = 1.08 × 104 L mol-1 cm-1) attributable to the closed-ring isomer 1c. The emission intensity of diarylethene 1o in a photostationary state was quenched to ca. 32% in hexane and 43% in PMMA film.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene compound, 1-[2-methyl-5-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-3-thienyl]-2-[2-methyl-5-(3-fluoro-4-chloro) phenyl-3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1o) was synthesized, and its properties, such as photochromism and fluorescence properties in solution as well as in PMMA amorphous film, were investigated specifically. 1o exhibits good photochromism and fluorescence upon alternating irradiation with UV light and visible light (> 510 nm) in hexane and a PMMA film.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2-methyl-benzothiophenyl) - 2-((5-(9, 9-dibutyl-fluorenyl)-2-methylthiophen-3-yl)) perfluoroncyclopentene (1o), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films and fluorescence were investigated. The photochromic reaction kinetics indicated that the cyclization process of 1o belongs to the zeroth order reaction and the cycloreversion process belongs to the first order reaction. When the concentration at 5 × 10-5 mol/L the fluorescence peak have the maximum.

A new photochromic diarylethene bearing naphthyl unit was synthesized efficiently. Its photochromic properties and the fluorescence property were examined in hexane solution and in PMMA film. The concentration effect in hexane solution was investigated also. The results indicated that the photochromic diarylethene have good photochromic property and exhibit remarkable fluorescence switching property and when the concentration at 2 × 10-5 mol/L the fluorescence peak have the maximum.

A new green photochromic diarylethene compound, 1,2-bis[2-n-hexyl-5- (2,2-dicyanovinyl)-3-thienyl]-perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized and its photochemical properties were investigated in detail. The measurement results demonstrated that the compound has good photochromism in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. Upon irradiation with 365 nm light, the colorless of the hexane solution and the PMMA film turned colored and under the visible light irradiation (λ > 510 nm) the colored hexane solution and the colored PMMA film return to colorless.

A new red diarylethene compound, 1,2-bis[2-n-hexyl-5-hydroxymethyl -3-thienyl]-perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized and its photochemic properties and fluorescence were studied. Specifically, photochromism in solution and in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films were investigated. The results showed that it exhibited good photochromism in both solution and PMMA amorphous film under photoirradiation. In addition, the compound exhibited relatively strong fluorescence that can be useful for the design of the fluorescence molecule switch.
