A new internal multiband mobile phone antenna formed by two printed monopole slots of different lengths cut at the edge of the system ground plane of the mobile phone is presented. The antenna can generate two wide bands centered at about 900 and 2100 MHz to cover the GSM850/GSM900/DCS/PCS/UMTS bands and the 2.4-GHz WLAN band. Further, the antenna has a simple planar structure and occupies a small area of only. It is also promising to bend the antenna into an L shape to reduce its volume occupied inside the mobile phone. Good radiation characteristics are obtained over the two wide operating bands.

A novel internal global system for mobile communication/digital communication system (GSM/DCS) antenna suitable for application in mobile devices such as the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) phone is presented. The antenna has two radiating strips designed to operate at about 900 and 1800 MHz for GSM/DCS operation, and is backed by and short-circuited to a step-shaped ground plane. With the use of the step-shaped ground plane, which is to be placed at the top edge of the system ground plane of a PDA phone, the antenna can be employed in very close proximity to the possible RF shielding metal cases for battery and associated RF module/circuitry, with almost no degradation in the antenna performances. In addition, the antenna almost occupies no board space in the system ground plane, and is with a very small protruded length (3 mm only in this study) over the top edge of the system ground plane. The antenna is thus very promising to operate as an internal antenna, and in addition, shows an attractive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) property with nearby conducting or RF elements inside a mobile device

In this paper, we present a promising design of the monopole slot antenna for multiband operation in the mobile phone. The antenna is formed by two monopole slots of different lengths and is capable of multiband operation covering the AMPS/GSM/DCS/PCS/UMTS/WLAN bands. With multiband operation achieved in this study, however, the proposed printed monopole slot antenna requires a small area of 15 x 40 mm2 on the system circuit board of the mobile phone. Design considerations of the antenna are described in detail in the paper, and results for the constructed prototype are presented and discussed.

A novel embedded DTV antenna for application in laptops has been proposed and studied. The proposed antenna can provide a wide operating bandwidth for DTV signal reception in the UHF band. In addition, the proposed antenna has a narrow width of 10 mm only, thereby making it very promising to be embedded within the spacing between the display and the casing of the laptop to operate as an embedded antenna. The proposed antenna also shows good radiation characteristics for frequencies across the operating band.

A novel internal meandered loop antenna for multiband operation in the mobile phone has been proposed. Strong effects of the users hand on the impedance and radiation characteristics of the antenna have been observed. Results indicate that, when the users hand is close to or cover a certain portion of the antenna, large decrease in the antennas radiation efficiency and great distortion in the antennas radiation pattern for both the unbalanced and balanced modes will occur. On the other hand, when the users hand holds the mobile phone with a large distance to the proposed antenna, smaller decrease in the radiation efficiency has been observed for the antennas self-balanced mode than the antennas two other unbalanced modes.

In this paper, a technique of connecting the upper ground to the main ground through an extended conducting strip along the side edge of the main ground was presented. By selecting a proper length of the extended conducting strip such that the upper ground is connected to the main ground at a position where there are small excited surface current distributions. With this proposed technique, a recently reported printed monopole slot antenna capable of penta-band operation in the bar-type mobile phone to the folder-type mobile phone was applied.
