A new species in the family Irciniidae (demospongiae: Dictyoceratida) from Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Kyung Jin Lee

Sponges of the family Irciniidae are poorly known in Korean waters. This paper describes a new species of new genus, Bergquistia coreana n. sp. in the family Irciniidae (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida) from Jejudo Island, Korea from 1998 to 1999. Bergquistia n. gen. is characterized by extremely simple fasciculated and uncored primary fibres. However, in the choano‐somal region, primary fibres are made of wider clear web. Secondary fibres form a very thin regular uncored network. The sponge surface has thick and regular conules. The colour is beige throughout the sponge, and the texture is slightly hard and compressible. Thickness of filament is variable.

Two new species of the genus mycale (poecilosclerida: Mycalidae) from Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Kyung Jin Lee

Two new species belonging to genus Mycale are described from the waters around Geojedo Island and Gageodo Island, Korea. Mycale (M.) geojensis n. sp. seems close to M. (M.) adhaerens parvasigma Hoshino, 1981, but our new species has three categories of anisochelae. M. (Aegogropila) hentscheli n. sp. is closest to M. (A.) obscura (Carter, 1882) in shape and spicule, but has no large sigma.

A new species of the genus hymeniacidon (Demospongiae: Halichondrida: Halichondriidae) from Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Kyung Jin Lee

A new sponge species of the genus Hymeniacidon (family Halichondriidae) from Munsum, Jeju Island, Korea is described. This species is similar to H. sinapium in spicule size, but the color, oscules, external surface and arrangement of the spicules are considerably different. This species is bright yellow in live, and retains multiple oscules and a plumose bundle of styles in the subectosomal region.

Two New Psammocinian Sponges (Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) from Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Kyung Jin Lee

Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. lobatus and P. rubra, are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island) and Jejudo Island, Korea. Psammocinia lobatus is most closely related to P. wandoensis Sim and Lee in growth form. However, it can be distinguished by its sharp conules and primary and secondary fibres, lightly cored with detritus. Psammocinia rubra is readily distinguished from the other described Psammocinia species by the blunt conules, reddish brown color of specimen, brown color of fibres and filaments, secondary web between adjacent primary fibres and filament coated with brown granules.

A new sponge of the genus Phorbas (Poecilosclerida: Hymedesmiidae) from Gageodo island (So‐Huksando), Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Hyung June Kim

A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted with materials collected from Gageodo Island, Korea, from August 1999 to July 2001 by SCUBA diving. Among them, Phorbas gukhulensis n. sp. is new to science. Phorbas gukhulensis n. sp. is similar to P. fitictius Pulitzer‐Finali from which it differs in spicule size and growth form.

Two New Species of the Genus Mycale (Naviculina)(Poecilosclerida: Mycalidae) from Ulleungdo Island, Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Dong Won Kang

A study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Ulleungdo Island, Korea, from July 2001 to August 2003. Two species, Mycale (Naviculina) ulleugensis and Mycale (N.) neunggulensis, are new to science. Mycale (N.) ulleugensis n. sp. seems close to M. chungae based on the shape of spicules, but differs in the size of megascleres and sigmas, Mycale (N.) neunggulensis n. sp. seems close to M. flagellifer Vacelet and Vasseur in the type and size of spicules, but differs in the shape of naviculichela. Naviculichela I of M. flagellifer has a spine on the upper part of the felix.

Two new sponge species of the genus Stelletta (Astrophorida: Ancorinidae) from Korea

Chung Ja Sim; Young A. Kim

Two new species of the genus Stelletta (Astrophorida: Ancorinidae), S. spinulosa n. sp. and S. calyx n. sp., are described from the waters around Gageodo Island (Sonuksando) and Ulleungdo Island, Korea. S. spinulosa n. sp. is similar to S. crassispicula (Sollas, 1886) in the feature of entire animal, but differs from it in the shape of orthotriaene and the form and size of oxyasters. S. calyx n. sp. resembles to S. crater Dendy, 1924 in the shape of sponge, but the new species has four size categories of oxyaster whereas S. carter has no oxyaster.

A new sponge of the genus smenospongia (Dictyoceratida: Thorectidae) from Gageodo island, Korea

Kyung Jin Lee; Chung Ja Sim

Abstract A new species of the genus Smenospongia (Dictyoceratida, Thorectidae), S. coreana n. sp., is described from Gageodo Island, Korea. This new species is readily distinguished from the other species of Smenospongia by the un‐lobated growth forms and un‐crowded primary fibres. S. aurea and S. lamellata are no distinction between primary and secondary elements, but this species is easily distinguished from them. The matrix easily derived from the fibres. This species has five sesterterpenes, three scalarane‐types and two linear furanosesterterpenes, in chemical compounds.

Two new marine psammocinian sponges (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) from Korea

Kyung Jin Lee; Chung Ja Sim

Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. conulosa n. sp. and P. ulleungensis n. sp., are described from Namhaedo Island and Ulleungdo Island, Korea. Psammocinia conulosa n. sp. seems to be close to both P. amodes Cook and Bergquist, 1998 and P. hawere Cook and Bergquist, 1996 on the basis of the skeletal structure. However, these three species are clearly separated by the following differences: Shape of P. amodes is spatulate and thin, with a broad blade narrowing to a semi‐cylindrical stalk; P. hawere forms cups with a shallow excavated bowl, and attached to the substratum by a narrow base. The whole surface of the new species is very finely conulose. Psammocinia ulleungensis n. sp. is similar to P. gageoensis Sim and Lee, 2001 in shape, but this species is easily distinguished from P. gageoensis by the simple skeletal structure.

A New Sponge of the Genus Haliclona (Gellius) (Haplosclerida: Chalinidae) from Gageodo Island (So-Huksando), Korea

Hyung June Kim; Chung Ja Sim

A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Gageodo Island, Korea from August 1999 to July 2001. Among them, Haliclona (Gellius) coreana n. sp. turned out to be new to science. This new species seems to be close to H. (G.) arcoferus Vosmaer, 1885, based on the type of spicules. However, it is different in size of toxa and growth form. Toxa of the new species is half in length compared to H. (G.) arcoferus. The growth form is jar shaped in this new species, but flat in H. (G.) arcoferus.
