Transition to IPv6 and support for IPv4/IPv6 interoperability in IMS

Dupyo Choi; Christine Fischer; Anne Y. Lee; E-Ling Lou; Chung-Zin Liu; Hsien-Chuen Yu

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) R5 standards specified the use of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) for the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). However, early implementations of IMS are being introduced into the service architecture of existing access networks supporting Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4)-only clients. As support for IPv6 clients is introduced into an established IMS IPv4 network, the transition to IPv6 must be handled gracefully and interoperability between IPv4 and IPv6 clients must be addressed. These issues have the potential to impact the access-independent nature of IMS specified by 3GPP. This paper illustrates a set of key technical challenges faced by both wireless and wireline service providers in deploying IMS services and offers a number of solutions for these challenges.

SIP-based services architecture across wireless and wireline access

Chung-Zin Liu; Bill Bushnell; Jim Freeburg; Tod Sizer; Michael Charles Recchione; Thomas Wayne Anderson

There are strong market and industry drivers to support a common set of end-user services ubiquitously across several wireline and wireless access technologies: UMTS/CDMA, 802.11 WLAN, Bluetooth∗ WLAN, DSL, and cable TV/packet cable. Currently, service providers must use different services architectures for providing the same end-user services on different access networks. A common Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based architecture that can support a wide range of text, voice, and video services has been developed; it is based on the 3GPP/3GPP2 IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) standard. With a few minor extensions, the IMS services architecture can be used to support services across wireline and wireless access networks.
