WHO OWNS ANTIQUITY? MUSEUMS AND THE BATTLE OVER OUR ANCIENT HERITAGE. A REPORT OF THE ALCTS PRESIDENT'S PROGRAM, AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE, CHICAGO, JULY 2009

Cindy Hepfer

Through the implementation process of Gold Rush, they have found it to be a simple, easy-to-use, web-based system. Price demonstrated many of the features available in Gold Rush. Gold Rush provides an A-to-Z list and link resolver. (Texas A&M Libraries uses SFX, so they are not currently using these features.) Statistical reports are generated and used by librarians for collection analysis. Also, the contents of the license agreements will be made available to the staff in the future, which may be especially useful for interlibrary loan. Price described some of the problems encountered with the product. They discovered a problem loading e-book information because the product was designed for serials, that is, there is a field for the ISSN but not the ISBN. Gold Rush staff supplies them with fake ISSNs to load the e-book title list. The system does not work with SFX, so they cannot integrate the features of both systems. Also, the manual inputting of information takes time. She concluded by noting that Gold Rush is a very good systems for a small library, but because Texas A & M Libraries system is a larger and more complex organization they are investigating the acquisition of a more robust ERMS. Following the presentations, there was an opportunity for questions from the audience. There was a consensus among the speakers that the process of acquiring and implementing an ERMS took longer than anticipated, an average of one to two years. Also, the speakers all agreed if they had to do it again, they would all purchase a commercial system. There are an overwhelming number of tasks required to acquire and maintain electronic resources, so it is useful and more productive to have a system in which most, if not all, of this information can be stored.
