Wetlands, very sensitive and valuable ecosystem can be monitored in terms of water surfaces dynamics as well as vegetation characterisation and monitoring exploiting satellite data. The synergy between the recently launched Sentinel1 and Sentinel2 satellites have been investigated over the Poyang and Anhui lakes in PR China. Results highlight the gain in terms of operationality with a very high revisit exploiting the two systems, as well as for a thematic point of view with no was not yet reach at this resolution for water bodies and terrestrial, floating and submerged vegetation mapping and monitoring.

Synergy of VHR pleiades data and SWIR spectral bands for flood detection and impact assessment in urban areas: Case of Krymsk, Russian Federation, in July 2012

Claire Huber; Stéphanie Battiston; Hervé Yésou; Claire Tinel; André Laurens; Mathias Studer

Within the framework of preparatory studies for future Earth Observation (EO) missions such as ARCTOS, the CNES requires a technical vision of spectral band usefulness, and in particular the benefits of including Short Wave Infrared channels (SWIR) in future Very High Resolution (VHR) optical sensors. Involved in the definition of such systems and in the thematic testing of simulated future and recent EO data, SERTIT analyzed the synergy of VHR Pleiades data and SPOT 5 SWIR spectral band in flood detection and impact assessment within urban areas using quasi-synchronous images over the July 2012 Krymsk disaster, southern Russian Federation. This study revealed the complementarity of SWIR and VHR, the value of SWIR for flood detection even during draw-off, and the potential of VHR in detecting mud traces and impact assessment.

A wide range of new optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites has been launched in the recent years, with increased capacities for imaging the Earths topography. This is the case in particular with the optical Pleiades-HR constellation, having the capacity of acquiring up to several images along the satellite track for generating elevation data. Identically TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites allow greater accuracy than previous SAR missions thanks to their close tandem flying formation inducing no temporal decorrelation between the interferometric image pairs. A quality assessment analysis is currently in progress for both techniques, intending to underline that these sensors offer very interesting results in comparison with existing data. Not only will a lot of applications benefit from this improved accuracy, but this will help developing new ones in a range of thematic domains.
