Agrarian trajectories in Argentina and Brazil: multilatin seed firms and the South American soybean chain

ABSTRACT Since the turn of the century, Argentinian seed firms have been internationalizing their operations, focusing on neighbouring countries, specially Brazil. A ‘flex crop’ such as soybean has constituted a central focus for their investment. This article analyses investment opportunities and different intellectual property rights as key drivers of internationalization, and examines the ability of firms to develop networks that are both ‘inward’ and ‘outward’ in their orientation, as well as the tensions involved. The analysis points to the emergence of South-South flows of capital that aim to strengthen their position within key components of agri-food chains, and the formation of transnational elites grounded in global circuits of accumulation.

La Diversificación de los Mercado como Estrategia de la Agricultura Familiar

Based on different theoretical approaches on markets, the article analyzes the marketing mechanisms deployed by family fruit growers in the northeast of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). The area is of particular interest as a local production system which has been experiencing a retraction process, in sharp contrast with the expansion of soybeans oriented to the world markets. The analysis considers the nature of the links established and the composition of capitals as determinants of market insertion, and regards markets as areas of social interaction where new relationships are built. It argues that the diversification of sale channels reinforces the diversification found in the productive level, and that the circuits dominated by large companies and local markets are used in a complementary way by family farmers, instead of being mutually exclusive alternatives.

El articulo analiza uno de los componentes centrales de los actuales enfoques sobre desarrollo local-rural; la nocion de concertacion social. Establece los puntos de vinculacion existentes entre la tematica de concertacion y la nocion de gobernanza, y examina algunas de las problematicas involucradas - entre cooperacion y conflicto, entre eficacia y legitimidad, y entre nivel local y niveles extra-locales - . Sostiene la necesidad de complementar estos esquemas con la construccion de una vision nacional del desarrollo y acciones tendientes al empoderamiento real de los sectores excluidos.
