The design and implementation of O2, an object-oriented database system

François Bancilhon; Gilles Barbedette; Véronique Benzaken; Claude Delobel; Sophie Gamerman; Christophe Lécluse; Patrick Pfeffer; Philippe Richard; Fernando Velez

This paper describes the design and implementation of the first version of the O2 object-oriented database system. The Altair project is currently designing and implementing a complete environment for developing data intensive applications. As a first step, we have implemented a quick prototype of an object-oriented DBMS. We report here on this implementation. The first part of the paper describes the system interface as seen by the application programmer, the second part describes the architecture of the system.

RELOOP, an algebra based query language for an object-oriented database system

Sophie Cluet; Claude Delobel; Christophe Lécluse; Philippe Richard

In most object-oriented databases, as opposed to value-oriented databases, data are accessed by a programming language instead of a declarative query language. End users do not have a simple tool to perform their queries. This paper is concerned with the definition of an SQL-like query language on top of the O2 object-oriented database system. We study the influence of the object-oriented paradigm on a query language, describe our language through examples, define its semantics by means of an algebra and sketch the compilation of RELOOP in one of the languages supported by the O2 system.

New hope on data models and types: report of an NSF-INRIA workshop

Serge Abiteboul; Peter Buneman; Claude Delobel; Richard Hull; Paris C. Kanellakis; Victor Vianu

In May, 1990, a small workshop was held in New Hope, Pennsylvania, to discuss the fundamental issues raised by continuing work on the interface between databases and programming languages. Four topics were addressed: new directions stemming from object-oriented data models, contributions of type theory to database programming languages (DBPLs), applications of logic to DBPL issues, and DBPL implementations.nThis workshop was organized under the auspices of the INRIA-NSF program, Languages for Databases and Knowledge Bases.
