The relationship between multidimensional competitive anxiety, cognitive threat appraisal, and coping strategies: A multi-sport study

Cláudia Dias; José Fernando A. Cruz; António Manuel Fonseca

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between, multidimensional competitive trait anxiety (cognitive and somatic anxiety), trait cognitive threat appraisal, and coping styles. Five-hundred and fifty male and female athletes of several individual and team sports, between the ages of 15 and 35 (Mu2009=u200919.8u2009±u20094.5), completed the translated and adapted versions of the Sport Anxiety Scale and of the Brief COPE, as well as the Cognitive Appraisal Scale in Sport Competition – Threat Perception. Pearson and Canonical correlations showed that higher levels of trait cognitive anxiety and threat appraisal were positively related to emotion-focused and avoidance coping and inversely related to problem-focused coping. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of individual differences in trait anxiety and threat appraisals, regarding athletes coping styles.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Dutch Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance in Children with Cerebral Palsy. The sample was made up of 108 children (60 boys and 48 girls) with cerebral palsy, aged between 4 and 9 years, who suffered hemiplegia, diplegia or quadriplegia and had an IQ of 70 or higher. Most of the children (n=98) attended regular schools (integrated in kindergarten or primary school); indeed, only 10 children attended special schools for children with special needs. A sub-sample of 41 children filled out the scale in two different moments, separated one to two weeks maximum. The results of Pearson correlations between the two administrations (ranging 0.80 to 0.98) and the Cronbachs alpha (ranging 0.69 to 0.93) showed good reliability of the Portuguese version of the Dutch Pictorial Scale. Moreover, the inter-correlations between the four subscales (r=0.60 or higher) as well the mean scores associated by children with different characteristics (age, sex, medical condition) to the different subscales supported the internal validity of the instrument. Therefore, this study provides initial evidence about the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Dutch Pictorial Scale, which is why its use is recommended to assess the perceived competence and social acceptance of Portuguese children with cerebral palsy.

Tiago Vieira; Nuno José Corte-Real Correia Alves; Cláudia Dias; António Manuel Leal Ferreira Mendonça da Fonseca

Based on the importance of behavior and life satisfaction for the health of young people and the considerable regional differences that exist in mainland Portugal, an investigation was conducted. It sought to verify differences in levels of the practice of sport, tobacco and alcohol consumption and life satisfaction among students of the 3rd cycle of basic education living in different inland/coastal and rural/urban areas. The sample consisted of 5624 adolescents, aged between 12 and 17 years. The instrument used for data collection was the Inventory of Health-Related Behavior of Adolescents and a translated version of The Satisfaction With Life Scale. The results revealed that there are higher levels of smoking among young people living in urban and inland areas, higher levels of alcohol consumption among young people living in rural and inland areas and higher levels of life satisfaction among adolescents living in urban and coastal areas. Levels of sport were identical in all geographical areas. It was also found that there were significant differences in all variables of the analysis.

Emoções, "stress", ansiedade e "coping": estudo qualitativo com treinadores de nível internacional

Cláudia Dias; José Fernando A. Cruz; António Manuel Fonseca

A Systematic Review of Psychological Studies Applied to Futsal

Wichai Yeemin; Cláudia Dias; António Manuel Fonseca

Abstract This study presents a systematic review of psychological studies applied to futsal. A total of 23 studies were analyzed within five sections: a year overview and the name of journals, research designs, data collection, sample characteristics, and a focus category. This study found that the first psychological articles that were applied to futsal were published in 2008, and the number of publications gradually increased since then. The majority of examined studies were cross-sectional designs and conducted at the elite level in European and Asian countries. Most studies did not use mixed methods and did not specify the age of the subjects. Psychological research applied to futsal focused on athletes, non-athletes and several psychological factors. Critical and innovative reflections were made to highlight research gaps and present suggestions for further research.
