Structure and Reactivity of Cyanocuprates Containing the Monoanionic C,N-Chelating Aminoaryl Ligand [C6H4CH2NMe2-2]

Abstract The 2:1 cyanocuprate [Ar2Cu(CN)Li2(THF)4]∞ (1, Ar=[C6H4CH2NMe2-2]−) is obtained as the only product in the reaction of two equivalents of ArLi with one equivalent of CuCN in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at −78°C. The X-ray crystal structure reveals an ionic polymeric chain consisting of consecutive [Ar2Cu]− and [(THF)2LiCNLi(THF)2]+ units. Its composition in THF solution has been investigated.

Oxidative decomposition of cyanocuprates of the type CuLi(CN)Ar (Ar = [C6H4(CH2NMe2)-2]-, 1a) or type CuLi2(CN)Ar2(1b) shows the unexpected formation of aryl-cyanides in up to 30% yield.
