The heat capacity of the liquid–liquid mixture perfluoroheptane and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (also known as iso-octane) has been measured for the first time near its upper critical consolute point using an adiabatic calorimeter. The theoretical expression for the heat capacity near the critical point was applied to our combined data runs. The critical exponent α was determined to be 0.106±0.026, which agreed with theoretical predictions. When α was fixed at its theoretical value of 0.11, our value for the amplitude ratio A+/A−=0.59±0.05 was consistent with experimental determinations and theoretical predictions. However, the two-scale-factor universality ratio X, now consistent among experiments and theories with a value between 0.019 and 0.020, was violated in this system when using the published value for the correlation length.

An 80ppi ¼ VGA full color, single layer, Reflex™ display with red, green and blue reflecting sub-pixels is reported. A phototunable chiral dopant is UV exposed to produce these colors, and polymer walls keep the colors separate after tuning. We will present details of this development and discuss applications.

To reduce the power consumption and improve the image quality of a full color Cholesteric LCD, low driving voltage Cholesteric LC and crosstalk-free drive schemes have been respectively developed. The developed technologies were integrated into a 5″ full color QVGA Cholesteric LCD with a low-cost single-layer structure. The performance of the display validated the development approaches.

Flexible, reflective, bistable displays have become the focus of significant research over the past decade due to their appeal for alternative applications requiring low power, small form factor, and flexibility. Some of the first flexible displays to be offered in the market are non-traditional Reflex™ displays in unique and exciting new applications, such as, writing tablets, electronic skins, and smart card displays (Fig. 1).
