Living specimens add a valuable dimension to the study of invertebrate zoology; yet many inland schools offering such a course use only preserved specimens. Preserved specimens frequently become distorted and colorless, making invertebrate zoology a dry and unrealistic course. This practice is unfortunate and unnecessary because marine aquaria can be inexpensively and easily maintained. Marine aquaria stimulate students and provide interesting and unusual displays for visitors to the classroom, as well as serving as a resource for instructors. Basic aquaria equipment, techniques, specimens, and food are discussed in the following article.
