Perenniporiella chaquenia sp. nov. is described from Argentina. New records of P. pendula and P. micropora are discussed. A key to Perenniporiella species is presented. Preliminary phylogenetic relationships of Perenniporiella are inferred from parsimony and Bayesian analysis of a combined set of DNA sequence data (nuclear ribosomal partial LSU and ITS). It demonstrated that Perenniporiella forms a well resolved monophyletic clade distantly related to Perenniporia s.s. It also clearly showed that within Perenniporia as usually conceived other morphologically homogeneous group of taxa, such as the P. ochroleuca or P. vicina alliances, form well resolved clades, which could be recognized as distinct genera. The differentiation of the hyphal system and the basidiospores morphology are outlined as critical features for the definition of genera in the Perenniporia complex.

The status and identities of Polyporus unitus, type of Perenniporia Murrill, of Boletus medulla-panis, their supposed synonymy, and the nomenclatural status of Perenniporia, Poria, and Physisporus are discussed. It is demonstrated, based on the study of its type, that Pol. unitus is not a synonym of B. medulla-panis even in the historically wider context than that recognised here. Although not precisely identifiable, the type of Pol. unitus does not belong to Perenniporia in its current sense, which is based on B. medulla-panis. Poria Pers. and Physisporus Chevall. are discussed as possible generic names for B. medulla-panis and related taxa. However, in view of the need for nomenclatural stability, it is proposed to maintain Perenniporia as currently accepted, with B. medulla-panis as conserved type. This name is epitypified and Perenniporia medulla-panis redefined. Based on a study of European specimens, two species are recognized within the historical circumscription of P. medulla-panis, Perenniporia meridionalis being described as new. Both species are compared with other European taxa with resupinate basidiomes and a key to all these taxa is presented.

The effects of temperature, water activity (aw), incubation time, and their combinations on radial growth and ochratoxin A (OTA) production of/by eight Aspergillus niger aggregate strains (six A. tubingensis and two A. niger) and four A. carbonarius isolated from Moroccan grapes were studied. Optimal conditions for the growth of most studied strains were shown to be at 25°C and 0.95 aw. No growth was observed at 10°C regardless of the water activity and isolates. The optimal temperature for OTA production was in the range of 25°C∼30°C for A. carbonarius and 30°C∼37°C for A. niger aggregate. The optimal aw for toxin production was 0.95∼0.99 for A. carbonarius and 0.90∼0.95 for A. niger aggregate. Mean OTA concentration produced by all the isolates of A. niger aggregate tested at all sampling times shows that maximum amount of OTA (0.24 μg/g) was produced at 37°C and 0.90 aw. However, for A. carbonarius, mean maximum amounts of OTA (0.22 μg/g) were observed at 25°C and 0.99 aw. Analysis of variance showed that the effects of all single factors (aw, isolate, temperature and incubation time) and their interactions on growth and OTA production were highly significant.

Perenniporiella gen. nov. is segregated from Perenniporia. The new combinations Perenniporiella neofulva and Perenniporiella micropora, and the new species Perenniporiella pendula are proposed. Perenniporia piperis and Perenniporia albida are considered as taxonomic synonyms of P. neofulva. The three species are described and their taxonomic position is discussed. A key to the neotropical Perenniporiella and Perenniporia species with pileate basidiomes is presented.

The taxonomy of several neotropical resupinate Perenniporia is discussed. P. xantha is described as new. It is characterized by a bright yellow resupinate basidiocarp, small pores and small ellipsoid, dextrinoid basidiospores in addition to reduced arboriform skeletal hyphae. Two new combinations are proposed, Perreniporia aurantiaca and P, chromatica. Their relation to other Perreniporia species is briefly discussed.

During a revision of some polypores from Cuba (Basidiomycetes, Aphyllophorales), the type specimen of Navisporus ortizii was re-examined and found to be conspecific with Perenniporia martius. The latter is compared with Navisporus sulcatus and its presence in Cuba is briefly discussed. An annotated review of Perenniporia species reported from Cuba is added

Decock & Stalpers discuss the current taxonomic situation in Perenniporia and the subsequent nomenclatural problems in detail. The current lectotype of Perenniporia, Polyporus unitus Pers., long considered to be identical with Boletus medulla-panis Jacq., is neither conspecific nor congeneric with the latter. Hence the current, well-known concept of Perenniporia, developed around Perenniporia medulla-panis (Jacq. : Fr.) Donk, does not include the actual type of the generic name.

Abundisporus sclerosetosus sp. nov, from the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Singapore is described. The species was collected on a dead trunk of Shorea sp. (Dipterocarpaceae) and is characterized by a trimitic hyphal system and digitate, setiform hyphae in the trams of the tubes. The taxon is compared with Abundisporus violaceus, A. fuscopurpureus, A. roseoalbus, and also with a few South-East Asian taxa described by Corner in Loweporus. A key to the Abundisporus and pileate Loweporus species with basidiospores shorter than 5 mu m is provided
