The effect of torsion angle on the rate of intramolecular triplet energy transfer

Andrew C. Benniston; Anthony Harriman; Peiyi Li; Pritesh V. Patel; Craig A. Sams

The magnitude of electronic coupling between the terminal chromophores shows a precise dependence on the dihedral angle around a bridging biphenyl group.

Controlling the torsion angle via adventitious cation binding

Andrew C. Benniston; Peiyi Li; Craig A. Sams

Abstract We report herein the synthesis of a linear binuclear ruthenium(II) complex, and the corresponding free ligand, for which the organic connector is a geometrically-constrained crown ether that binds added cations.

Tetrahedron Letters | 2003

Building molecular-scale bridges having restricted rotation

Andrew C. Benniston; Anthony Harriman; Peiyi Li; Craig A. Sams

Abstract The synthesis is reported of a binuclear ruthenium(II) bis(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) complex for which the polytopic ligand incorporates a central, torsionally-constrained biphenylene group. In principle, the dihedral angle between the two phenylene rings can be controlled by the length of the constraining strap.

Conformational control of electron delocalisation in geometrically-constrained, binuclear ruthenium(II)bis(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) complexes

Andrew C. Benniston; Anthony Harriman; Peiyi Li; Craig A. Sams

On the basis of temperature-dependent emission studies made with the target binuclear compounds, it is concluded that the extent of electron delocalisation at the triplet level depends on the torsion angle imposed by the bridge.

Tetrahedron Letters | 2003

Synthesis of a biphenyl-based cyclophane via benzidine rearrangement of a constrained m-nitrophenol derivative

Andrew C. Benniston; William Clegg; Anthony Harriman; Ross W. Harrington; Peiyi Li; Craig A. Sams

Abstract The benzidine rearrangement of a constrained m -nitrophenol derivative results in production of a cyclophane comprising a biphenyl group and a polyether tether connected at the 4,4′ positions.

Temperature-induced switching of the mechanism for intramolecular energy transfer in a 2,2':6',2' '-Terpyridine-based Ru(II)-Os(II) trinuclear array.

Andrew C. Benniston; Anthony Harriman; Peiyi Li; Craig A. Sams
