Three mixed-ligand complexes [M(L)(Phen)(H2O)] n · nH2O [M = Ni (1), Co (2), Zn (3)], (L = 2-methylquinoline-3,4-dicarboxylate dianion; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized by the reaction of MCl2 with 2-methylquinoline-3,4-dicarboxylate acid, sodium hydroxide, and 1,10-phenanthroline under hydrothermal conditions and were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1–3 crystallize isomorphously in the orthorhombic space group Pbca and feature 1-D helical chains. These helical chains are linked to form a 2-D layer through π–π stacking interactions, which are further linked by hydrogen bonds to form a 3-D network. Solid-state properties such as thermal stability and fluorescence emission of the polymeric Zn complex 3 have also been investigated.

The benzene ring in the title compound, C10H10O4, makes an angle of 4.4 (1)° with the C—C—C—O linker. The hydroxy groups are involved in both intra- and intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The crystal packing is stabilized by O—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding interactions. The molecules of the caffeic acid ester form a dimeric structure in a head-to-head manner along the a axis through O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The dimers interact with one another through O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming supermolecular chains. These chains are further extended through C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds as well as van der Waals interactions into the final three-dimensional architecture.

In the title complex, [Cd(C3H2N3O2)2(H2O)2], the CdII atom is coordinated by two N and two O atoms from two deprotonated 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxylic acid ligands (TRIA) and two water molecules. The Cd atom is located on an inversion centre. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked together via O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network.

The title compound, C30H50O3, which was isolated from a marine endophytic fungus, is a new friedelan derivative. The molecule contains five six-membered rings, which exhibit boat (ring A), distorted boat (ring B) and chair (rings C–E) conformations. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which link neighbouring molecules into 12-membered rings.

In the title complex, [Ni(C11H9ClN3O2)2]·4H2O, the Ni atom is coordinated by four N atoms and two O atoms derived from two tridentate 3-chloro-6-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)picolinate ligands. The cis-N4O2 donor set defines a distorted octahedral geometry. In the crystal structure, the complex and water molecules are linked by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

In the title complex, [Cu(C3H2N3O2)(NO3)(C12H8N2)], the CuII ion is coordinated by an N and an O atom from a bidentate 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxylate (TRIA) ligand, two N atoms from a 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligand, and an O atom from a nitrate ligand in a slightly distorted square-pyramidal environment. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link molecules into one-dimensional chains propagating along the b axis direction.

In the title compound, [Ni(C11H9ClN3O2)(C7H3NO4)]·2H2O, the NiII atom is coordinated by two N atoms and one O atom of 3-chloro-6-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)picolinate and by one N atom and two O atoms of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate in a distorted octahedral coordination. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked together by intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. One water molecule is disordered over two positions; the site occupancies are ca 0.53 and 0.47.

In the title complex, [Mn(C11H10N3O2)2]·3H2O, the MnII atom is coordinated by four N atoms and two O atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. The molecules are linked together via hydrogen bonds involving the water molecules. One of these is disordered equally over two positions.

The title compound, C19H19N3O7S·CH3OH, was synthesized from syringic acid and sulfamethoxazole. The benzene rings make a dihedral angle of 41.8 (1)° and the isoxazole ring is twisted by 74.3 (1)° from the central benzene ring. The crystal packing features O—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds in which the hydroxy groups from the main molecule and methanol solvent molecules serve as donor groups.

In the title compound, [Na(H2O)4](C15H9N2O2), the Na+ ion is coordinated by six water molecules in an octahedral geometry. The NaO6 octahedra are connected by sharing edges, forming a cationic chain along the b-axis direction. O—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the chains and the 2-(2-pyridyl)quinoline-4-carboxylate anions into a two-dimensional network parallel to (100).
