Abdullah Sevin; Cuneyt Bayilmis; Ismail Kirbas

The proposed MAC protocol guarantees QoS requirements of all subscribers as described in the ISO/IEEE 11073 standards.A slot allocation scheme, priority classification, admission control mechanism, and channel allocation with bit error rate reduction mechanism are described to ensure QoS.The proposed MAC protocol is compared with standard technologies and recent protocols in the literature, and it achieves better results for end-to-end delay, packet loss ratio, and throughput parameters. Wireless body area networks (WBANs) consist of tiny sensors that enable monitoring the health status of a person. quality of service (QoS) is a major challenge for WBANs due to the importance of vital sign information. Therefore, many QoS-based medium access control (MAC) protocols and technologies have been developed to overcome this problem. Standardization of various technologies and protocols must be addressed. ISO/IEEE 11073 personal health data standards aim to provide interoperability between healthcare devices and technologies. This paper presents a new QoS-aware cross-layer MAC protocol based on the ISO/IEEE 11073 standards that employs a slot allocation scheme, multi-channel architecture, priority mechanism, admission control, and cross-layer solution. The proposed MAC protocol has been modeled and simulated by OPNET Modeler. In addition, the proposed MAC protocol is compared with standard technologies and recent protocols in the literature, and it achieves better results for end-to-end delay, packet loss ratio, and throughput parameters. Yunus Ozen; Necla Bandirmali; Cuneyt Bayilmis

WMSNs carry heterogeneous traffic with different urgency and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. While the need to minimize the energy consumption is important in wireless sensor networks WSNs, offering QoS support for especially real-time multimedia transmission is a challenging issue due to resource constrained nature structure of sensor nodes, unreliable wireless links and unpredictable environmental conditions. Currently, there is an emereging need for new QoS- aware, priority- based Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols on to be employed in WMSNs. The proposed new two tiered service differentiation mechanism provides about 4 times lower end -to -end latency for urgent real- time video traffic compared to the other data traffic types while as well as providing it can achieve lower better end-to- end latency for each traffic class. Proposed Its mechanism has been fundamentally focused on QoS provisioning at MAC layer for urgent real-time data traffic on especially military applications.

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) have recently attracted more attention and have contributed to new potential wireless sensor network (WSN) applications such as border surveillance, battlefield monitoring, target detection, target tracking and habitat monitoring. WMSNs carry heterogeneous traffic with different urgency and quality of service (QoS) requirements. While the need to minimize energy consumption is important in WSNs, offering QoS for multimedia transmission is a challenging issue due to resource constrained nature of sensor nodes, unreliable wireless links and unpredictable environments. Currently, there is a need for a new QoS aware, priority based cross layer Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol on WMSNs. Proposed new two tiered service differentiation mechanism and data rate adjustment scheme provides 8.7 times lower average end to end delay for urgent real time video traffic while providing lower end-to end delay for each urgent traffic class. Proposed mechanism has been focused on QoS provisioning at MAC layer for urgent traffic on especially military applications providing data rate adjustment by application layer.

Car indoor gas detection system

Pejman Panahi; Cuneyt Bayilmis

Thousands of people are dying because of breathing Carbon monoxide (CO) gas every year. In terms of poisons history, it has more unintentionally deaths than any other ones. One of the main resources of generating CO is fuel. Number of vehicles that use LPG are increasing dramatically. Technical problem in LPG injection system sometimes will result in irreversible effects for driver and passengers. At the other hand many people especially in cold climate countries are travelling in winter with their own vehicles. In most cases many of people who their cars getting stuck in the snow, stay inside the car waiting for help. In this situation if the exhaust is blocked by snow or any other resources, the CO enters the car cabin and passengers without being noticed are died. In this paper, we introduce a system by using Arduino that is able to measure CO level, make warnings for driver and send vehicles geographic coordinate along with warning messages for defined telephone numbers in emergency situations.

Nowadays, despite there are many advanced technological applications to maintain the security of buildings, premises or regions, human intervention is necessary when considering both economical facts and the effectiveness of the systems especially for the security of military zones. In the presented work, a highly secure system has been designed. With the system to be implemented, the location, postures (lying, standing, sitting, and etc.), health conditions (body temperature, heart rate, and etc.), and environment conditions of the guard officers can be monitored remotely so that the key personal can be warned to take required steps in emergency at once. The system consists of three basic devices. First, an originally designed portable Wireless Sensor Node (WSN), which detects the desired parameters and transfers them to a Wireless Central Unit (WCU) by a secure radio frequency communication, is placed on the guards. The WCU collects all information to the center coming from wireless sensor nodes. Finally, a Central Monitoring Unit (CMU), in which all information from the WCU is monitored visually and evaluated, has been designed and implemented.

Performance aspects of isMAC protocol for WBANs using isMOTES

İsmail Kırbaş; Alper Karahan; Sezgin Kaçar; Cuneyt Bayilmis

Wireless body area networks (WBAN) consist of wireless smart sensor nodes placed on, in or around the human body for medical monitoring systems, entertainment and ubiquitous computing. The nodes in WBAN are usually battery-powered and they send sensed data from a human body, including heart rate, temperature and ECG, etc. to the medical centre to monitor the health situation of individuals. One of the major problems of a WBAN is to prolong the sensor network lifetime. To solve this major problem, different approaches are used, but the most effective one is a well-designed MAC protocol. This paper investigates three inter-BAN communication methods and suggests a coordinator node rotating mechanism to ensure energy balance among the sensor nodes and to extend the network lifetime up to 59%.
