Abstract Beg, S.A., Tukur, N.M., Al-Harbi, D.K. and Hamad, E., 1994. Densities and excess volumes of the benzene-cyclohexane system between 298.15 and 473.15 K. Fluid Phase Equilibria, 94: 289-300. This paper reports the results of measurements of the densities of binary mixtures of benzene with cyclohexane using a high pressure stainless steel pycnometer system for the whole composition range at various temperatures between 298.15 and 473.15 K. The experimental densities were compared with those predicted by the Hankison-Brobst-Thomson (HBT) correlation and the Spencer and Danner Modified Rackett (SDR) equation. Both the HBT and the SDR showed an average deviation of about 0.58%. The excess molar volumes, VE, calculated from the density values have been found to be positive for all the concentrations and temperatures considered.

Densities and excess volumes of cyclohexane + hexane between 298.15 K and 473.15 K

Shafkat A. Beg; Nasiru M. Tukur; D.K. Al-Harbi

Abstract This paper reports the results of measurements of the densities of binary mixtures of cyclohexane with hexane using a high pressure stainless steel pycnometer system at various temperatures between 298.15 K and 473.15 K. The results were compared with those predicted by the Hankinson-Brobst-Thomson correlation (HBT) and the Spencer and Danner modified Rackett equation (SDR). The HBT equation showed an average deviation of about 0.36% from the experimental results while the SDR equation showed a 0.15% average absolute deviation. The excess molar volumes, VE, calculated from the density values have been found to change from positive to negative values with the increase of temperature.

Non-catalytic partial oxidation of sour natural gas

H.K. Abdel-Aal; M.A. Shalabi; D.K. Al-Harbi; T. Hakeem

Abstract There is a need to convert the natural gas reserves available in Saudi Arabia to value-added products preferably transportable products (fuels) and/or chemicals. The proposed method makes use of what is known as non-catalytic partial oxidation of sour natural gas. The method offers a promising alternative in utilizing surplus natural gas inexpressibly by eliminating the costly gas sweetening process needed for conventional steam-reforming. The work presented in this paper is carried out to validate the technical feasibility of the proposed process. Preliminary results are reported using computer-aided process simulation software.

Dual-purpose chemical desalination process

H. K. Abdel-Aal; A. A. Ibrahim; M. A. Shalabi; D.K. Al-Harbi

Abstract The separation of sodium chloride from sabkha water was carried out using a chemical conversion approach. A sdium cation and chloride anion were converted into sodium bicarbonate, which is precipitated under experimental conditions, and ammonium chloride, which can be separated by crystallization, respectively. Concentrated brine solutions of 25% salt content were the feedstock used. In addition to partially desalted water, chemical products of economic potential values were produced, namely soda ash and ammonium chloride. Utilization of the brine exit from MSF desalination plants as feed stock is another alternative.

Hydrocarbon Group Analysis of Arabian Crude Oils TBP-Fractions

Shafkat A. Beg; F. Mahmud; D.K. Al-Harbi

ABSTRACT Experimental studies have been carried out on hydrocarbon group analysis of commercial Arabian crude oil fractions corresponding to the true boiling point ranges or 200–400 ast;F, 400–500 ∗F 500–650 ∗F, 650–850 ∗F, and 850 ∗F-K The crude oils included Arab heavy (API∗ = 28·0), Arab medium (API∗ = 30·0), Arab light (API∗ = 33·3), and Arab Berry extra light (API∗ = 36∗9). Waters Hydrocabon Group Analyzer (HGA) system interfaced with model 730 Data Module has been used to obtain the compositional analysis in terms of saturates, neutral aromatics, polar aromatics and asphaltcnes.

Study of transient heat transfer in laminar flow of a non-newtonian fluid over a flat plate

S.K. Achwal; D.K. Al-Harbi

Abstract Unsteady state heat transfer in laminar flow of a non-Newtonian fluid flowing over a flat plate is investigated. Effect of Prandtl number and the viscosity index on the transient is also studied. The steady state temperature profile obtained from the model agrees with the published results.
