Elastic properties of tantalum over the temperature range 4–300 K

R. G. Leisure; D. K. Hsu; B. A. Seiber

The elastic properties of tantalum have been investigated over the temperature range 4.2–300 K. The values of the adiabatic elastic constants C11, C44, and CL=(1/2) (C11+C12+2C44) at 4.2 K in units of 1012 dyn/cm2 are, respectively, 2.70, 0.873, and 3.02. The Debye temperature was calculated from the elastic constants and found to have the value of 265 K at low temperature. The elastic constants become temperature independent at low temperatures and approach linear behavior at high temperatures. In contrast to the normal behavior of the elastic constants, nuclear acoustic resonance experiments show anomalous line broadening.

Nuclear acoustic resonance in tantalum at high magnetic fields

R.G. Leisure; D. K. Hsu; B. A. Seiber

Abstract Nuclear acoustic resonance has been observed at much higher magnetic fields than previously reported for nonmagnetic materials. Marked differences between the Δm = 1 and the Δm = 2 line shapes in tantalum were noted.

Rotatable sample holder with voltage readout for low‐temperature experiments

G. R. Ashton; D. K. Hsu; R. G. Leisure; B. A. Seiber

A rotatable sample holder suitable for use at low temperatures is described. This holder was designed for continuous wave ultrasonic experiments. The rotation mechanism and the angle sensing mechanism are discussed.

Reversal of the Hall field in indium

E.J. Ozimek; R.G. Leisure; D. K. Hsu

Abstract The Hall effect in single crystal has been investigated at 63 kOe over the 6–280 K temperature range. The Hall coefficient reverses sign as a function of temperature. The high temperature value is less negative then theoretical predictions.
