The ability of metals to conduct both electricity and heat is a major reason for their use in many applications. Static buildup on electrical equipment and high-speed machinery is prevented by grounding of metal parts, and heat-generating components are often protected by the dissipation of excess heat through metal conductors. In a similar manner, high-frequency electromagnetic radiation is either prevented from escaping from the equipment or the equipment is shielded from stray radiation by metal shields and covers.
