The current challenge with which most shipyards are faced is to reduce the design time and the time-to-delivery benefits of new information technologies such as ERP, APS, and SCM system. These technologies should integrate the information that flows in the enterprise wide activities. First of all we should maintain control of ship design and product data such as bill of material, product structure, drawing, 30 modeling and manufacturing information for the integration. The product data management (POM) system copes with these requirements. All the product data is stored in POM database and vaults in a structured manner and all the changes of product data are monitored, controlled and recorded. This study discusses how POM system can be implemented in shipyard. The procedure is surveyed to apply a POM system for the ship design data management. This study also presents several examples in order to make a practical guidance for ship POM implementation. Proposed studies can be useful for shipyards planning to adopt POM systems in enterprise wide manner.

World leading company and research centers have invested much cost and effort into a PLM and digital manufacturing field to obtain their own competitiveness. We have been trying to apply a digital manufacturing, especially simulation to ship production process as a part of PLM implementation for a shipyard. A shipbuilding production system and processes have a complexity and a peculiarity different from other kinds of production systems. So, new analysis and modeling methodology is required to implement digital shipyard. which is a digital manufacturing system for a shipbuilding company. This paper suggests an analysis and simulation modeling methodologies for an implementation of a digital shipyard. New methodologies such as a database-merged simulation, a distributed simulation, a modular simulation with a model library and a 3-tire simulation framework are developed.

The business environment is changing rapidly because of the global crisis. In order to survive and enhance competitiveness in the global market, global manufacturing companies are trying to overcome the crisis through the convergence of production infrastructure and IT technology. The importance of systems to support the integration of manufacturing processes, collaboration in product development, and information integration of providers and producers is therefore increasing. In this paper, research is conducted on the design and implementation of a collaboration system to support a power-boat manufacturing company in this situation of increased demand for collaboration and information integration. The system was designed through product-structure and production-process analysis, support product data management, and enterprise contents management. The company involved in the power-boat development project is expected to show an improvement in productivity through the integrated management of information and collaboration provided by this system.

Nowadays, environmentally friendly technology is attracting considerable attention because of environmental pollution and the increasing price of raw materials. Korea has a high level of dependence on exports, and therefore it has stressed the development of environmentally friendly technologies. Bicycle manufacturing industry has a bright future because bicycles do not use fossil fuels, and cycling is good for ones health. We develop a management system for the effective development of next-generation environmentally friendly technology for bicycles. The goal is to promote the bicycle industry in Korea while keeping the product in the low to medium price range.

Recently, CFRP composites have often been used as the materials for lightweight pleasure yacht hulls. Because CFRP composites not only make the hull light but also have good physical characteristics, in the leading countries of the marine industries, CFRP yachts are being sold at a higher price. The design and construction of FRP composite yachts, including those made of CFRP, have to follow rules based on ISO 12215, such as the hull structure rules of the international classification societies. On the other hand, there are no rules related to CFRP composites in the Guidance for Recreational Crafts, which was newly revised by the Korean Register of Shipping. In this paper, ISO 12215-5 and Part B, RINA Pleasure Yacht (REGISTRO ITALIANO NAVALE) on the design pressure and scantling of CFRP hull structures are compared and analyzed. Through a comparative study and the application to a cruise yacht design, we try to understand how to design CFRP hull structu res using the international standards, ISO 12215, and the rules of the international classification society, RINA.

There were many simulation models that made for validation of industrial environment and estimate of efficiency to be constructed. And there will be more simulation models made for same reason, too. Already, there have been a lot of simulation models in industry field and scholar labs. To reuse these simulation models, it is necessary to find common properties and make the high abstract simulation model. Based on this idea, this study shows to define the high abstract simulation model to be able to specialize in need and to make the software framework for connecting the specific simulation model to the abstract model. And it is held up as the example that applying the simulation framework to the Ship Panel Block shop simulation model.

As naval ships become more complex with the reduced cost and time for their development, modeling and simulation are increasingly used. The US navy has being applied the concept of a simulation-based acquisition(SBA) to their acquisition process. However, there have been few studies on a simulation-based acquisition for naval ships (SBA-NS) in the Korean naval shipbuilding. In this paper, we discuss a framework to establish collaborative environment(CE) for an advanced naval ships acquisition based on PLM. For this, we propose architectures and a naval ship information model for design the framework of the SBA-NS. To design the framework, we develop the methodology that is composed of three major processes that are the requirement analysis process, the SBA-NS architectures design process and the design process of a reference model of a naval ship product information. Applying the methodology, the framework suitable for the Korean Navy context is developed.

As the automation of ship production system proliferates, it is unavoidable to move the real machinery, facility, application software, and virtual environment from the heterogeneous data environment to the integrated one. However, it is a prevailing situation that each component operates under the different environment, due to the inability of interchanging the data in a structured manner between the components. The issue is obstacles to improvement of the application system. To facilitate seamless exchange of data among the manufacturing systems, STEP, PDML, and XML has been tried by other studies. This study has investigated how XML data can be applied to exchange the data among the ship production system components. XML data is applied to the forming shop in shipyard to overcome the present difficulties on sharing and exchanging of the information. An example of forming information is represented by XML to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. In addition, an application of XML information applicable to virtual factory and electronic work order sheet is included.

The resistance performances were studied for two 50-ft-class power yachts made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) with different hull form characteristics using model tests. The tests were carried out at a high-speed circulating water channel (CWC) for the 16–38 knot range. The total resistance, trim, and sinkage were measured, and the results were compared with wave patterns. The results showed that a chine position at the draft line had a strong effect on the planning performance and resistance performance in a certain velocity range.

The shipbuilding process is changing due to changes in the development environment and technological requirements for military ships. This would also hold true for a submarine, because its shipbuilding process includes complicated design and construction conditions. System improvement efforts for the design and construction of military ships have continued with the goal of overcoming these conditions. At present, the Korea Navy is developing a 3,000 ton-class Korean type submarine, and its design is progressing by the introduction of a full 3D-ship CAD system. Although the 3D modeling system was introduced for effective design realization through the introduction of collaborative design and active utilization of M&S (modeling and simulation), the introduction effects are not yet generally obvious, according to the characteristics of ship design. The present paper discusses the collaborative environment for developing a submarine to enhance this. This paper proposes the architecture and data structure of a system for realizing collaborative design and discusses a case system developed on the basis of this.
