Dae-Seok Lee; Young-Dong Lee; Wan-Young Chung; Risto Myllylä

A distributed healthcare monitoring system prototype for clinical and trauma patients, is to be developed, using wireless sensor network node. The proposed system aims to measure various vital physiological health parameters like ECG and body temperature, of patients and elderly persons and transfer his/her health status wirelessly in Ad-hoc network, to remote base station which is connected to a hospitals main Server, using wireless sensor node. Main server shows information of sensor node which transfer presently vital data and if an abnormal ECG activity is encounter, the server will store 1 minute of the ECG-recording and then transmit the recording to PDA and standard PC as a Clinical Diagnostic Station(CDS). Server can calculate Heart Rate(HR) and variation in the R-R interval and if desired by doctor, averaged values together with maximum and minimum values are calculated every on minute.

Dae-Seok Lee; Sachin Bhardwaj; Esko Alasaarela; Wan-Young Chung

A new approach for electrocardiogram (ECG) signal monitoring and analysis for the homecare of elderly person or patients is designed and implemented. Developed platform for real-time analysis of ECG signals on sensor node can be used as an advanced diagnosis and alarming system. Sensor node does not need to transmit ECG data all time in wireless sensor network and to server. Firstly sensor node can detect abnormality in ECG then transfer abnormal ECG data in the network to server for further analysis. This system can be used to reduce data packet overload and to save power consumption in wireless sensor network. It can also increase the server performance by reducing load. The ECG features are used to detect life-threatening arrhythmias with an emphasis of analyzing QRS complex in ECG signals at a sensor node. Based on abnormal ECG activity due to R-R interval and QRS width, the sensor node can transfer ECG data to the server for extended and cautious ECG analysis and disease classification. Needed information of abnormal ECG of a patient the server can then be transferred to the doctors personal digital assistant (PDA) for further diagnostics.

New Concept of Healthcare Parameter Analysis on Sensor Node for Ubiquitous Healthcare System

Dae-Seok Lee; Sachin Bhardwaj; Wan-Young Chung

This paper presents a new concept of healthcare parameter analysis on sensor node for ubiquitous healthcare system by detecting QRS-complex from real-time electrocardiogram (ECG). Wireless sensor nodes attached on the patients body and transmit ECG data continuously in ubiquitous healthcare system. So there are heavy communication traffics between sensor nodes and gateways. Our new developed platform for real-time analysis of ECG signals on sensor node can be used as an advanced diagnosis and alarming system for healthcare. Sensor node does not need to transmit ECG data all the time in wireless sensor network and to server PC via gateway. When sensor node detects suspicion or abnormality in ECG, then the ECG data in the network was transmitted to the server PC for further analysis and then can notify to the doctors personal digital assistant (PDA). This system can reduce data packet overload and save some power in wireless sensor network. It can also increase the server performance.

Gi-Hyun Hwang; Kyoung-Hwan Cha; Do-Un Jeong; Dae-Seok Lee

This paper describes a design for RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) tag using license plate attached the vehicle bumper in UHF(Ultra High Frequency) MHz band. Its range of the fabricated tag antenna that the license plate and the vehicle bumper were fixed by volt and nut was observed 8.2 m. This measured readable range showed about 5 m above far distance more than the average readable range of commercial tag antenna. The RFID have ability of 0.5 seconds of recognition speed in the evaluation of performance.

An u-healthcare system using an wireless sensor node with ECG analysis function by QRS-complex detection

Dae-Seok Lee; Sachin Bhardwaj; Wan-Young Chung

Small size real-time ECG signal analysis function by QRS-complex detection was put into sensor nodes. Wireless sensor nodes attached on the patient’s body transmit ECG data continuously in normal u-healthcare system. So there are heavy communication traffics between sensor nodes and gateways. New developed platform for real-time analysis of ECG signals on sensor node can be used as an advanced diagnosis and alarming system for healthcare. Sensor node does not need to transmit ECG data all the time in wireless sensor network and to server PC via gateway. When sensor node detects suspicion or abnormality in ECG, then the ECG data in the network was transmitted to the server PC for further powerful analysis. This system can reduce data packet overload and save some power in wireless sensor network. It can also increase the server performance.

A study on WSN based ECG and body temperature measuring system for ubiquitous healthcare: 2. Vital signal monitoring software system

Dae-Seok Lee; Wan-Young Chung

An ubiquitous healthcare monitoring system for elderly person at home was designed for continuous healthy monitoring of elderly person or patients. Human vital signals, such as ECG and body temperature, were monitored by terminal PC or PDA via ECG and temperature sensor nodes on the patient`s body. From the ECG data, the heart rate, tachycardia, bradycardia and arrhythmia were diagnosed on the terminal PC or PDA to assist doctor`s or nurse`s aid or patient itself to monitor the patient`s condition and give medical examination. Artificial judgement support system was designed in server computer and the system support a doctor or nurser for management or treatment of the patient. This system can be applied to vital signal monitoring system for solitude elderly person at self house or home health care service part. And this ubiquitous healthcare system can reduce the medical expenses in coming aging or aged society.

Young-Dong Lee; Dae-Seok Lee; Gaurav Walia; Esko Alasaarela; Wan-Young Chung

Design constraints that emerged from the applications requirements have posed new challenges for design of healthcare system using wireless sensor networks. Wireless healthcare monitoring using sensor networks have some different requirements and priorities than those needed for environment, agriculture and industrial monitoring network. This paper discusses healthcare issues and describes a query supported healthcare system using USN platform for health monitoring. This system is capable of obtaining physiological data from sensor attached to patients body and transfers it wirelessly to a remote base-station in an ad-hoc network, following IEEE802.15.4 standard for wireless communication. Furthermore the system packet loss performance was evaluated for different sampling rates and packet length.
