The Incidence of Kidney Stones after Small Intestinal Bypass Operations for Treatment of Obesity

Lars Bäckman; Dag Hallberg

In Sweden the incidence of kidney stones in a normal population is 1 per 1000 population per year (Ahlgren, Lorstad 1965; Ljunghall, Hedstrand 1975). After jejuno-ileostomies for treatment of obesity in 107 subjects at Karolinska Hospital, operated between 1969 and 1975 and observed for more than one year, 23 of them developed kidney stones. The stone incidence in this postoperative group is 60 per 1000 population per year.
