Anthropogenic effects on heavy metals and macronutrients accumulation in soil and wood of Pinus sylvestris L.

Abstract The investigation is focused on the uptake of heavy metals and macronutrients fluxes in Pinus sylvestris L. wood and soil under the sampled trees from contaminated and control sites. Soil pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and total and bioavailable heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and macronutrients, potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) were compared on contaminated and control sites. Also, metal uptake of contaminated and control pine woods was determined. Concentrations of soil bioavailable Cd (0.009 mg kg−1), Pb (0.11 mg kg−1), Cu (0.076 mg kg−1), Zn (0.51 mg kg−1) and K (24.42 mg kg−1), Mg (8.44 mg kg−1) on the contaminated plot were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than on the control plot 0.00004 mg kg−1 for Cd, 0.007 mg kg−1 for Pb, 0.002 mg kg−1 for Cu, 0.22 mg kg−1 for Zn and 7.81 mg kg−1 for K, 2.40 mg kg−1 for Mg. Experimental research of road maintenance salts and molasses ("safecote") corrosive impact on metals

Abstract The purpose of this investigation is to assess the corrosive impact of de‐icing salts and product “Safecote” on metals by performing immersion and spraying experiments. Metallic elements such as metallic bridges, road signs, and cars, situated near the road, are exposed to salts used for road maintenance in winter seasons. The salts, used to de‐ice the road surface, can cause metal corrosion. NaCl, CaCl2, also mixture of NaCl and CaCl2 are most commonly used salts in Lithuania. Ions of chloride are the main agents which increase corrosion rate and the metal mass loss. This harmful effect could be mitigated by replacing the salts with organic de‐icers, for instance, product “Safecote” based on molasses, which is a by‐product of sugar production. Sorption of heavy metals from polluted water and their migration in the system soil‐tree

Abstract Large amounts of various contaminants are transported via natural processes from technogenic pollution sources to air, water, soil and natural ecosystems. Heavy metals (HM) are very hazardous substances having long‐lasting impact on ecosystems. They have complex negative impact on human health, animals, flora and fauna at watercourses and microflora of wastewater. Often concentration of HM exceeds maximal available concentration in wastewater. HM enter forests in their wet and dry forms from local or outer atmosphere sources; they are also brought from seas alongside with biogens and sea salt or washed from putrid or putrescent plants that concentrate in the soil or they are brought by wind or water together with mineral particles. Monitoring of forests determined that contaminants, i e HM inhibit energetic status of a tree and cause increase of tree sensitivity to diseases. Trace metal concentration and speciation in storm water runoff on impervious surfaces

AbstractUrban storm water runoff (USWR) often transports various trace metals, affecting the quality of receiving waters. Metal concentration and speciation in USWR were investigated by analysing data collected during a storm event on 19 July 2012. USWR samples were taken from a low–traffic intensity road, a pathway in a car–free pedestrian zone, and a galvanized metal roof located in the area of Vingio Park in the city of Vilnius, Lithuania. The metals were mostly in the insoluble form at all three sites, being more than 80% of the total amount measured, irrespective of the water quality characteristics and types of surface area. The partitioning coefficient (log Kd) of trace metals decreases in the order Zn > Cu ≈ Mn ≈ Pb >> Cd. The USWR types characterized by a higher pH or dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration produced a higher fraction of Cd, Mn, Pb, and Zn bound to fulvic acids (FA).

Numerical modeling of kinetics of heavy metal sorption from polluted water

Abstract Water protection is one of the most important priorities of environmental protection. It is necessary to reduce pollution of wastewater in order to reduce pollution of drinking‐water and water pools. One of the most dangerous wastewater pollutants are heavy metals (HM). They have a negative influence on people and aquatic water systems. The paper analyses possibilities of the sorption method application for heavy metal elimination from waste‐water. Experimental investigation of HM sorption from water and numerical modeling usage possibilities for prognosis of the HM sorption kinetic process was carried out as well as experimental study of HM elimination efficiency dependence on sorption time of HM from wastewater, when using sorbents. Relative Humidity and Temperature Impact to Ozone and Nitrogen Oxides Removal Rate in the Experimental Chamber

Abstract The indoor ozone and nitrogen oxides concentration depends on their outdoor concentrations, indoor sources and their removal rates on the surfaces. The paper presents experimental data of the of ozone and nitrogen oxide removal in the chamber. The ambient conditions were simulated by four combination of different temperature and relative humidity levels. The impact of temperature (T = 20 °C and T = 30 °C) and relative humidity (RH = 24% and RH = 80%) on the deposition velocity was estimated. It was found that the ozone removal in the chamber was influenced more by temperature, and the nitrogen oxides removal was affected more by relative air humidity. The results showed that higher ambient temperature (T = 30 °C) increased the ozone removal rate in the chamber 3 times on an average, and high relative humidity (RH = 80%) increased the NOx removal rate 4.5 times in comparison with the initial conditions (T = 20 °C; RH = 24%). Usage of Plants for Fat-Polluted Soil Treatment

Abstract Following the complex technology for greasy waste utilization, which is under development, two stages of fat degradation – biodegradation and phytoremediation – were applied for treatment of fat-polluted soil. Biodegradation was used in the first stage, and phytoremediation was applied for degradation of residual fat and final restoration of soil structure. The latter technology was used to evaluate the ability of three following species of herbaceous plants to degrade fat in soil: red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.), and hybrid ryegrass (Lolium hybridum Hausskn.). The evaluation after the stages of phytoremediation showed that hybrid ryegrass was the most effective in fat degradation in soils with high initial fat concentrations (100 g/kg and 55.1 g/kg), i.e. 53% and 67% respectively. Radiological investigation of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in Lithuania

Abstract The paper presents 40K and 137Cs activity concentrations in muscle, bones and liver of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) from eastern and northern Lithuania. The short description of the applied radiochemical method is given. Activity concentrations of 40K in muscle ranges between 46.06 ± 0.43 and 110.92 ± 4.5 Bq kg−1 (fw = fresh weight). Average content of radioactive Cs in muscle is on the level of 5.78 ± 0.29 Bq kg−1. No clear relationship observed among the radionuclide concentrations in liver. The analyzed test samples do not show elevated contamination levels when compared with results of bones of small animals (rodents or insectivorous mammals) determined previously, so no accumulation ofbone seeking isotopes on higher step of the trophic chain concluded.
