Prosthetic Replacements in Patients on Hemodialysis for Chronic Renal Insufficiency

Twelve prosthetic hip and knee replacements (eight bipolar endoprosthetic replacements, three conventional total hip replacements, and one hemiarthroplasty of the knee) were implanted between 1978 and 1988 in eleven patients who underwent hemodialysis for chronic renal insufficiency. Five replacements (three conventional total hip replacements, one bipolar endoprosthetic replacement, and one hemiarthroplasty of the knee) in four patients had a failure due to the loosening of the component. In these four patients, the median age at operation was 51 years and the average length of follow-up was 6 years. One of these patients died of infection in both loosened total hip replacements seven years and four months after the operation.

Treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip with the functional cast

Eight cases of congenital dislocation of the hip were treated in our hospital with functional cast. Two cases failed in reduction by the Palvic Harness, and 6 cases were not treated before one year old. They were treated with our cast for 8 weeks after manual reduction. This cast enables the patients to move legs cephalad and caudal a little in axillar position. All cases obtained good results.

The Experience of Early Controlled Mobilization Following Repair of Zone 5-7 Extensor Tendon Ruptures

We treated ten patients with Zone 5-7 extensor tendon ruptures (RA 5 cases; crush type 3; clear cut 2;) by means of early controlled mobilization using a dynamic splint. Only active flexion was allowed after a few days, but overflexion was blocked by a plaster volar splint. We think that early controlled mobilization contributes to lack of complaints in PIP joint, decreasing of edema, prevention of intrinsic muscle contracture and active exercise of tendon excursion.
