HERMETICALLY COATED OPTICAL FIBERS

Recently, as fiber is being considered for use in harsh environments, users have recognized the need for hermetically coated optical fiber. These optical fibers must be resistant to one or more conditions - high stress levels, fatigue over long periods of time, optical degradation due to hydrogen diffusion, chemical attack, and often, high temperatures.

Mechanical and hydrogen characteristics of hermetically coated optical fibre

Cornings hermetically coated fibre has been evaluated for mechanical and hydrogen performance under severe test conditions using large sample sizes. The results indicate that the carbon coating is truly hermetic, and that it provides an effective barrier for preventing hydrogen and water from reaching the glass surface. As a result the hermetically coated fibre possesses superior resistance to fatigue and hydrogen permeation over standard fibre. These attributes make this hermetically coated fibre and excellent candidate for use in terrestrial communication and undersea cables, as well as in other special applications where a harsh environment is present.

Chromatic dispersion compensated 25Gb/s multimode VCSEL transmission around 850nm with a MMF jumper

A special multimode fiber jumper was designed to provide desired DMD characteristics for a multimode fiber link for chromatic dispersion compensation. 25 Gb/s VCSEL transmission experiment was conducted. Performance benefit of CD compensation was observed.

We propose a scheme of using special MMF jumper to provide desired DMD characteristics and chromatic dispersion compensation for a MMF link. 25 Gb/s VCSEL transmission results and additional estimate of jumper length are presented.
