coverage of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 focused not on the violence of Jihadists but on remembrance of the victims. And focus groups in Australia suggest that Muslims there perceive increasing balance in media reports of Islam and that non-Muslims commonly distinguish between majority Islam and the extremist minority. These findings come as cold comfort to Muslims denied asylum in Australia, but they do indicate increased nuance both in Western news media and the public. Media Framing of the Muslim World could contribute to classes on media and society and media and religion as supplementary reading. The book ignores radio—there is no mention of National Public Radio, for instance, or BBC World Service, home of Muslim news presenter Razia Iqbal—and it says little about Western news websites. But its discussion of how and why the West often misunderstands the world’s second largest religion is provocative, timely, and accessible and deserves consideration.
