La critique genetique ne peut pas ignorer la dimension extensionnelle de la genese. Elle aurait avantage a s’appuyer sur l’idee de monde, sans doute plus utile, a cet egard, que la notion de diegese, parce qu’elle permet de concevoir une pluralite de mondes stipules. En prenant soin de distinguer mondes textuels et mondes fictionnels, on pourra s’inspirer de la logique des mondes possibles pour essayer de preciser le statut des mondes, a la fois reels et virtuels, crees au cours de la genese et pour definir les regles d’accessibilite qui regissent les rapports entre ces mondes.

IntelliText: An Environment for Electronic Manuscripts

Publisher Summary IntelliText is a software program that was developed by Australias Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) for prototyping an electronic environment. This chapter describes relevant aspects of the IntelliText software and the results of prototyping an electronic FinnegansWake. IntelliText emulates an electronic “book” but focuses on the reading and annotation of a book instead of authoring its the contents. An IntelliText book is a single-user book, not a multiuser reading tool. IntelliText addresses the issue of reading an electronic publication by maintaining and extending the “book” metaphor across the systems interface; implementing a “path” metaphor as the mechanism for creating bounded navigation structures through the document space and supporting the context sensitivity of reader interactions wherever possible. IntelliText is implemented as a hyper-textual navigation network of instances of the basic knowledge Types. IntelliText implements two elementary visualizations for knowledge types―the text view, displaying the content in a textual representation; and the map view, displaying a graphic representation. The chapter also describes some issues for future research. The main issue is the meaning and use of context.

Joyce’s Notebooks: Publicizing the Private Sphere of Writing

James Joyce’s notebooks, in particular the 14,000 pages related to Finnegans Wake, are both a curiosity, a colourful episode in the history of the notebook genre, and an exemplary case that requires us to rethink the notion of the preparatory notebook and what it presupposes. I would like to preface my discussion of these notebooks with two rather anecdotal observations.1
