Run-Time Adaptation of a Universal User Interface for Ambient Intelligent Production Environments

The SmartFactory KL is an arbitrarily modifiable and expandable (flexible) intelligent production environment, connecting components from multiple manufacturers (networked), enabling its components to perform context-related tasks autonomously (self-organizing), and emphasizing user-friendliness (user-oriented). This paper presents the results of a research project focusing on the run-time generation and adaptation of a universal task-oriented user interface for such intelligent production environments. It employs a Room-based Use Model (RUM) developed in the context of a continuing research project series on universal remote control devices for intelligent production environments. The SmartFactory KL is the first ambient intelligent production environment for demonstration and development purposes worldwide. After three years of research, a first prototype has been finished that allows for controlling the production line using a single remote user interface able to adapt to varying remote devices according to the actual context of use, in a complex, model-based approach.

Demonstrating remote operation of industrial devices using mobile phones

In the SmartFactoryKL, the intelligent factory of the future, a consortium of companies and research facilities explores new, intelligent technologies. Being a development and demonstration center for industrial applications, the SmartFactoryKL is arbitrarily modifiable and expandable (flexible), connects components from multiple manufacturers (networked), enables its components to perform context-related tasks autonomously (self-organizing), and emphasizes user-friendliness (user-oriented). In this paper, we present a prototypical system that enables commercial mobile phones to monitor, diagnose, and remotely control plant components via Bluetooth.

Third International Workshop on Model Driven Development of Advanced User Interfaces

Andreas Pleuß; Jan Van den Bergh; Stefan Sauer; Daniel Görlich; Heinrich Hußmann

The workshop Model Driven Development of Advanced User Interfaces(MDDAUI) aims at integrating results from the area of human-computer interaction and user interface modeling with the concepts of model-driven engineering. This paper provides a summary on the third edition of MDDAUI held as part of the MoDELS 2007 conference in Nashville, USA. In particular, it presents the results of the two group discussions of the workshop.

Personalized Use Models in Ambient Intelligence Environments

Daniel Görlich; Nancy Thiels; Gerrit Meixner

Abstract The impact of user interface quality has grown in software systems engineering, and will grow further with upcoming new paradigms such as Ambient Intelligence (AmI) or Ubiquitous Computing, which confront the production industry with a huge diversity of new usage situations. User in such situations cannot cope with the vast amount of information. Therefore, new models with respect to users’ needs are required to support them fulfilling their tasks. In this paper, the adaptation of a task-oriented use model to future paradigms is presented by considering personal structural preferences and advanced user interaction control. The model reflects user groups’ tasks and user interface structure preferences described in a system-independent language. For the future, this model is intended to be used for the run-time generation of user interfaces for adaptive software and intelligent environments, especially in the area of production and manufacturing.
