Widely Tunable All-Optical Wavelength Converter Monolithically Integrated with a Total Internal Reflection Corner Mirror Delay Line for 40Gbps RZ Operation

Joseph A. Summers; Vikrant Lal; Milan L. Mašanović; Nadir Dagli; Larry A. Coldren; Daniel J. Blumenthal

This paper reports on a novel widely tunable all-optical wavelength converter monolithically integrated with a compact turning mirror delay for differential operation at 40Gbps RZ. Wavelength conversion is achieved over 25nm of device tuning range.

Monolithically integrated widely tunable 40Gbits/s wavelength converter with optical label modulation function

Wen-Bin Zhao; Milan L. Mašanović; Daniel J. Blumenthal; Gregory A. Fish

What we believe to be a novel monolithically integrated wavelength converter consisting of a sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector laser, a long semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and a delayed interferometer Mach-Zehnder interferometer (DIMZI) is reported. Error-free 40Gbits/s wavelength conversion for three different probe wavelengths is demonstrated. The impact of the output filter bandwidth and filter detuning on the performance of wavelength conversion is studied in detail. The optical label modulation of the on-chip DI-MZI is first demonstrated with amplitude- and phase-shift key schemes.

A New Simple Process for Optical Mode Converter Integration with Active and Passive Waveguides in InGaAsP/InP

Xuejin Yan; Milan L. Mašanović; Daniel J. Blumenthal

Optical mode converters can significantly lower the coupling loss and simplify packaging of next generation optoelectronic devices. A new process which reduces the number of MOCVD regrowths required for integration of mode shape converters with active and passive waveguides is presented. A new wet etchant was effectively used in fabrication.

Novel Fabrication of Sub-Wavelength High Aspect Ratio Metal/Dielectric Gratings on InP Semiconductor Platforms

Erica Lively; Jonathon S. Barton; Daniel J. Blumenthal

We demonstrate the first reported fabrication of metal gratings using inverse dielectric patterning with greater than 3:1 aspect ratio. The fabrication method, grating pitch measurements, and potential to realize theoretically predicted devices are discussed.

10Gbps Monolithically Integrated Widely Tunable Wavelength Converter Using Quantum Well Intermixing

Vikrant Lal; Milan L. Mašanović; Erik J. Skogen; James W. Raring; Joseph A. Summers; Larry A. Coldren; Daniel J. Blumenthal

We report on the implementation and performance of an InP centered quantum well intermixed, MZI-SOA all-optical wavelength-converter monolithically-integrated with an SGDBR. We show error-free operation at 10Gbps, and 3dBm output power over 30nm output tuning.
