We present experimental data on strong-field ionization of atomic hydrogen by few-cycle laser pulses. We obtain quantitative agreement at the 10% level between the data and an ab initio simulation over a wide range of laser intensities and electron energies.

Electron-impact ionization of magnesium

Klaus Bartschat; Daniel Weflen; Xiaoxu Guan

A distorted-wave method as well as a hybrid approach, in which the description of the ejected-electron–residual-ion interaction is improved through a close-coupling expansion, has been applied to calculate electron-impact ionization of magnesium atoms. For comparison with currently available experimental and theoretical data for this process, we show that only a few partial waves need to be calculated by sophisticated methods, even if a large number of partial waves are required for convergence. Suggestions are made for additional experiments, which should provide even more sensitive tests of the computational models.

William Carl Wallace; Michael Pullen; Dane Edward Laban; Adam James Palmer; G F Hanne; A N Grum-Grzhimailo; Brant Abeln; Klaus Bartschat; Daniel Weflen; Igor Ivanov; Anatoli Kheifets; Harry M. Quiney; Igor Litvinyuk; Robert Sang; David Kielpinski

We have performed the first strong-field ionization experiment in atomic hydrogen using few-cycle laser pulses. Quantitative agreement between experimental data and advanced ab initio simulations has been achieved at the 10% level.

Carrier-envelope phase effects in few-cycle ionisation of atomic hydrogen

Michael Pullen; William Carl Wallace; Dane Edward Laban; Adam James Palmer; G F Hanne; A N Grum-Grzhimailo; Brant Abeln; Klaus Bartschat; Daniel Weflen; Igor Ivanov; Anatoli Kheifets; Harry M. Quiney; Igor Litvinyuk; Robert Sang; David Kielpinski

We have observed carrier-envelope phase effects in the ionisation of atomic hydrogen exposed to an intense few-cycle laser pulse. Experimental data show good agreement with an advanced ab initio time dependent Schrodinger equation simulation.

Benchmarking attosecond physics with atomic hydrogen

Michael Pullen; William Carl Wallace; Dane Edward Laban; Adam James Palmer; Friedrich Hanne; A N Grum-Grzhimailo; Brant Abeln; Klaus Bartschat; Daniel Weflen; Igor Ivanov; Anatoli Kheifets; Harry M. Quiney; Igor Litvinyuk; Robert Sang; Dave Kielpinski

We have performed the first experiment on the interaction of intense few-cycle laser pulses with atomic hydrogen. Experimental data is compared with an advanced ab initio simulation and agrees quantitatively with simulations at the 10% level.
