Aline Úrsula Rocha Fernandes; Marcelo Coelho Goiato; Daniela Micheline dos Santos

PURPOSEnThis study evaluated the effects of weathering (1008h) and thickness (1 and 3.5mm) on the superficial microhardness of the ocular button, using five colorless acrylic resins, and colorless buttons specific for ocular prosthesis.nnnMATERIALS AND METHODSnOne-hundred-and-twenty specimens were made and distributed allocated to 12 groups. Microhardness analysis was carried out with a microdurometer (Shimadzu, Japan) before and after weathering for 1008h. Data were then analyzed statistically by ANOVA and the Tukey Test at 1% significance.nnnRESULTSnThe data demonstrated that the ocular button and the QC 20 resin presented, respectively, the highest (22.9) and lowest (18.31) values of surface microhardness (Knoop), independently of the variable evaluated.nnnCONCLUSIONnThickness did not influence the property studied, and the specimens presented higher mean values of superficial microhardness after weathering for 1008h.

Acrylic resin is axa0widely used material in clinical practice, and axa0satisfactory biocompatibility is essential. When the resin polymerization reaction is incomplete, residual monomers are released into the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to evaluate, through axa0literature review, the cytotoxicity caused by the denture base acrylic resin used, and its components. The selection of published studies was performed on the Pubmed database from January 2008 to July 2013. The keywords used were: cytotoxicity and acrylic resins, cytotoxicity and denture base resins and cytotoxicity and oral prosthesis. Inclusion criteria were: in vitro studies and literature reviews published in English that evaluated the acrylic resin cytotoxicity for denture base and its components. Studies with no reference to the search strategy were excluded. Axa0total of 182 articles were found. Among these, only 13 were included for writing this review. The MTT test is the most common test used to evaluate acrylic resin cytotoxicity. Auto-polymerized resin is more cytotoxic than heat-polymerized resin because of its higher quantity of residual monomers which cause cell and tissue changes in the oral mucosa. However, more studies are necessary for the development of biocompatible materials.

Introduction: With the populational aging, a number of chronic and degenerative illnesses, common in the old age, will present more and more frequently. Purpose: To perform a literature review that addresses the most commonly manifested illnesses in third-age patients (ranging from chronic illnesses up to degenerative chronic illnesses). For such purpose, a description will be made regarding the concept and signs and symptoms of the most frequently observed illnesses in elderly patients, namely depression, stress, loss of memory, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, temporomandibular disorders, hypertension, vascular diseases, cardiac diseases, obesity, diabetes mellitus, urinary incontinence, hearing and visual disturbances, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Conclusions: Based on the review of literature, it may be concluded that not only health professionals, but all individuals that deal with elderly people in general should treat them with in a more attentive, patient, perseverant manner in order to minimize the limitations that each individual presents

PURPOSEnTo investigate if the presence of a cantilever influences the survival and success of partial fixed implant-supported prostheses, through a systematic review and meta-analysis, with additional analysis of the survival and marginal bone loss rates and prosthesis complications.nnnMATERIALS AND METHODSnThe register protocol of the review in the PROSPERO database is CRD42016052008. The MEDLINE and Scopus databases were used for an electronic search of relevant studies up to November 2016, by means of two independent reviewers. The keywords included the combinations fixed partial denture with dental implants, and with extension or cantilever; and implant-supported dental prosthesis with extension or cantilever. The inclusion criteria were randomized clinical trials and prospective and retrospective clinical studies in English that addressed the comparison of success and survival of the use of implant-supported fixed prostheses, with and without cantilevers. Data from the selected studies were used to perform the statistical analysis.nnnRESULTSnAmong the 408 articles identified, 4 articles met the eligibility criteria. The presence of a cantilever did not compromise marginal bone loss or the survival of the prostheses. However, minor complications were encountered for the group of partial fixed prostheses without cantilevers, with a statistical difference (P = .008).nnnCONCLUSIONnCantilevers can be used in fixed prostheses and do not interfere negatively in the survival or success of the prosthesis or the marginal bone loss. However, there are minor complications when prostheses without cantilevers, or short cantilevers, are used.
