A novel approach to rights sharing-enabling digital rights management for mobile multimedia

Zhiyong Zhang; Zhen Wang; Danmei Niu

Aiming at protecting the copyrights of audio, video and multimedia in mobile consumer electronics, a novel digital rights management (DRM) approach based on mobile Android terminal was proposed. Firstly, the solution adopted AES encryption and decryption algorithm to package multimedia contents, and meanwhile bound digital license to the hardware of the terminal device, as achieved the usage control and secure playback for mobile multimedia contents. Secondly, the license was written with Extensible Markup Language (XML), and especially a digital rights sharing between terminal devices was supported in the scheme. Thirdly, the times of reading and writing were reduced in the process of encrypting and decrypting multimedia contents by the way of introducing the appropriate size of the buffer, which effectively improved the encryption and decryption speed, and shortened the response time of the system. Finally, a prototype indicated that the solution has significant features of high security and faster cryptographic computation speed meeting the practical requirements for digital rights management and sharing by Android platforms.

Usage Control Model for Digital Rights Management in Digital Home Networks

Zhiyong Zhang; Tao Huang; Danmei Niu; Lili Zhang

The free distribution, unauthorized usage, and illicit sharing of copyrighted digital contents have become a common phenomenon with the rapid triple-play progress. The digital home network (DHN) is confronted with the open issue of digital rights management, and there is a lack of a formalized usage control model as well as some killer applications. The paper proposes a role-based cross-domain usage control model called the RCDUCM for DHN, which embraces two primary features of both role-based access control and security domain constraint management. RCDUCM is visually modeled by Unified Modeling Language to shorten the gap between the theoretical model and digital rights management applications. An application case denotes that the proposed model can implement consumer-contents-device license binding and transferring, the result of which is copyright protection of purchased digital contents against malicious piracy.

A DRM System for Home Network Based on RBAC and License Chain

Danmei Niu; Zhiyong Zhang; Lili Zhang

The purpose of DRM (Digital Rights Management) is to prevent from the illegal copy and distribution of digital contents. DRM technology could be used in home network, but in many situations, different users need different access rights to DRM contents in home network. The paper presented a DRM system for home network based on RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) and license chain. A DRM functional architecture for home network was shown, then the partition of roles and permissions for home network was made based on RBAC. Moreover, the working process of the system was put forward, and the system analysis was made. Finally, a conclusion was drawn and the future work was addressed.
