Time Delay Estimation in Two-Phase Flow Investigation Using the γ-Ray Attenuation Technique

Robert Hanus; Marcin Zych; Leszek Petryka; Dariusz Świsulski

Time delay estimation is an important research question having many applications in a range of technologies. Measurement of a two-phase flow in a pipeline or an open channel using radioisotopes is an example of such application. For instance, the determination of velocity of dispersed phase in that case is based on estimation of the time delay between two stochastic signals provided by scintillation probes. The proper analysis of such signals, usually in presence of noise, requires the use of advanced statistical signal processing. In this paper, the simulation studies of time delay estimation were carried out with the use of the following differential methods: average magnitude difference function, and average square difference function and proposed combined methods comprising the above-mentioned differential and cross-correlation functions are presented. Attached simulations have been carried out for models of stochastic signals corresponding to the signals obtained in gamma-ray absorption measurements of gas-liquid flow in a horizontal pipeline. The standard uncertainties of time delay estimations have been determined for each of the methods. Improved metrological properties have been stated in the combined methods in comparison with the classical cross-correlation procedure.

The rapid development of tomography methods particularly electrical, X and gamma rays allows for a wide range of the information about flow structure. However, all of such methods are quite complicated. At the same time much simpler systems as the measuring system of gamma rays absorption, allows to obtain a all key flow information which describe the two-phase flow. In the article the results of analyzes of radiometric signal that not only allow to recognize the type of flow, but also the assessment of forming structures are presented. Calculation and interpretation of the data were based on the crosscorrelation and cross-spectral density function. In order to verify the calculations the photographic documentation made during the measurements was used.

Digital Processing of Frequency–Pulse Signal in Measurement System

Dariusz Świsulski; E. Pawłowski; M. Dorozhovets

The work presents the issue of the use of multichannel measurement systems of sensors processing input value to impulse signal frequency. The frequency impulse signal obtained from such sensors is often required to be processed at the same time with a voltage signal which is obtained from other sensors used in the same measurement system. In such case, it is usually necessary to sample the output signals from all sensors in the same, predetermined points in time. Sampling voltage signal by means of A/D converters is practically possible in any selected time points, and the sampling frequency–pulse signal FPS requires special algorithms. The authors present the algorithms of digital signal processing pulse frequency offline and online modes, providing the acquisition of samples at certain evenly distributed points over time.
