In the present study, Nb-stabilized ferritic stainless steel was prepared with annealing (430-A) and without annealing (430-NA) annealing, and the microstructure of the resulting samples was examined. The steel was then subjected to cold rolling and isothermal annealing in order to analyze its recrystallization kinetics and texture evolution. Microstructural characterization was performed by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. Recrystallization kinetics were evaluated by measuring the microhardness of the samples, and analyzing their kernel average misorientation and grain orientation spread via electron backscatter diffraction. The Avrami exponent data revealed that one-dimensional grain growth occurred owing to the migration of high-angle grain boundaries. The mean activation energies for recrystallization for 430-NA and 430-A was found to be 365 and 419 kJ mol−1, respectively. The recrystallization texture was influenced by oriented nucleation and selected growth mechanisms, as well as by the Nb carbonitride distribution and grain boundary energy. The recrystallized and growing grains with the {554}〈225〉 orientation showed a dimensional advantage over the other recrystallized components. The coincident site lattice boundaries were attributed to the progression of recrystallization since the CSL numeric fraction increased as the temperature increased. The {554}〈225〉 component was associated with the ∑19a boundary, which exerted a significant control on the selective growth during the recrystallization.

ABSTRACT Medium manganese steel is typically fabricated from hot-rolling followed by cold-rolling and intercritical annealing processes. However, a singular process, warm-rolling, is an appealing prospect. The microstructure, mechanical properties and texture of a 8 wt-% Mn–0.08 wt-% C steel was investigated by cold-rolling followed by intercritical annealing or warm-rolling. The product from both processes exhibited a highly refined microstructure as well as a large volume fraction of austenite. However, a slightly larger volume fraction as well as a more heterogeneous austenite morphology resulted from the warm-rolling process, associated with a higher work-hardening rate. Microstructural analysis revealed intense α-fibre components due to a higher strain following the warm-rolling process as well as a considerably high-angle grain boundary number which was associated with dislocation accumulation. This paper is part of a Thematic Issue on Medium Manganese Steels.

The ferritic stainless steel type 430 stabilized with Nb, with and without annealing after hot rolling, was cold rolled and subjected to isothermal annealing at temperatures 650, 700 and 750°C for times ranging between 10 to 86400 s. The recrystallization kinetics was evaluated by JMAK model through microhardness measurements and KAM and GOS parameters. The Avrami exponent data indicate the occurrence of an unidimensional grain growth due only to high angle boundaries migration, with values ranging between 0.9 and 1.2. The nucleation rate and grain growth decreased continuously with time. The evolution of the texture was analyzed via EBSD analysis by ODF maps. The steel recrystallization is based on combination of ON and SG theories, due to presence of {111}<121>, {554}<225> and {111}<112> related to γ fiber. The rotated cube component, feature of the hot rolled steel, decreased with annealing time.
